The LINK YMCA is excited to announce The Home Grown Project. This Skilling Queenslanders for Work project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government and offers 8 paid traineeship positions to local young adults looking for work. The Home Grown project works holistically with participants to provide meaningful employment that leads to personal and professional growth. The project’s model is based on three influences on success:
Strong root system: Participants know themselves and feel grounded, centred, and present in day-to-day life.
Right ecosystem: Participants are operating in a healthy ecosystem that supports their needs and allows them to give back to the community.
Space to grow: We are just a starting point. One day participants will outgrow this place, and we want them to confidently step into their next adventure.
Trainees’ will complete a Cert I in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (AHC10120) as well as Chem-Cert (ACDC), First Aid/ CPR and White Card. During the 22-week paid traineeships, young people will work on our swale and garden at The Y Victoria Point, learning hands on skills in a team environment.

What will my time look like?
- Select and use relevant personal protective equipment appropriate for various land care task types
- Maintaining hedges, lawns, gardens and natural environments through weeding, hedging, mowing, watering and other basic conservation and horticultural activities
- Undertake employability training such as mentoring, coaching, and industry site visits
- Reporting on conservation and program progress which may include basic report writing, photograph collation and printing
- Basic gardening, planning, design, construction and/or repair as required
- Prepare and process debris and waste materials
Am I a good match?
- Have a passion for conservation, ecosystem management and be able to work outdoors
- Have access to public transport and/or own vehicle.
- First Aid and CPR Certificate; or willingness to obtain
- Must be eligible to work in Australia
- Achievement of YMCA’s Safeguarding Children Training Certificate and complete annual refresher training.
