Purpose Of Role:
An EV technical manager oversees the technical operations and maintenance of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, managing hardware, software, and network communications to ensures reliable and efficient charging services.
This role involves managing networks via Charge Point Management Systems (CPMS) and requires expertise in areas like hardware, software, and energy management.
There will be a need to successfully execute, deliver and collaborate with cross functional teams, complex technical projects and programmes as directed by the Head of Technical Field Operations.
There will also be a need to support, guide, train and advise on our ambitious Site Adoption programme, by working directly with the technical and operations teams to ensure the provision of high quality, high performance and energy efficient charge points.
Key Responsibilities:
- There will be a need to spend some time on site carrying out investigations on root cause and rectification across the Charge Point Network
- Technical Operations: Overseeing the day-to-day technical operations of EV charge points, including their hardware, software, and network connectivity.
- Network Management: Supporting and feeding back performance of the overall charging network into the Charge Point Management System (CPMS) to help continuously improve the monitoring and control of the charging network.
- System Integration: Ensuring that charge points integrate correctly with the backend management software, communication networks, and other relevant systems.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Implementing processes for proactive maintenance and quickly resolving technical issues to minimise downtime and ensure consistent charging services.
- Performance Optimisation: Using the management system to optimise charging performance, which can include smart load balancing, peak power control, and energy management features.
- Stakeholder Communication: Liaising with internal teams, external partners, and sometimes customers to align on technical priorities and ensure clear communication about the charging network's status.
- Setting budgets and updating project forecasts based on technical programmes
- Developing scopes of work and preparation of project invoices for issue to contactors and clients as necessary
- Identify and prioritise the development and training needs for field-based staff, contractors and key internal stakeholders.
- Mentoring and coaching as required to upskill resources as necessary.
- Continuous improvement of process and procedures across delivery, technology and operations disciplines.
- Reporting via agreed lines on project progress through preparation of reports to the Head of technical field ops
- Liaising with Clients, in house teams, Contractors and other Stakeholders on all technical aspects of in field performance, issues and improvements
- Ensure own continuous personal development and knowledge is up to date in line with regulatory standards and professional bodies.
- Promote a culture of pro-activity, innovation, transparency, collaboration and flexibility in all aspects of the work.
- Ensure that all the appropriate quality systems are in place for the work of the team. Ensure data is accurately recorded and processed in line with policy and procedures
- Ensure an exemplary health and safety culture is followed in line with Health & Safety at work legislation, associated regulations and standards particularly in relation to customer safety aspects including electrical safety and fire safety.
Requirements

- Hardware: Understanding the physical components of charge points.
- Software: Knowledge of Charge Point Management Systems (CPMS).
- Networking: Expertise in the communications infrastructure that connects charge points to the management system.
- Energy Management: Familiarity with load balancing, energy distribution, and peak power control to manage grid impact.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· Degree qualified or significant experience within the EV sector is advantageous but not essential
· Fully qualified electrician with at least 5 years’ experience including holding a NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification and 18th Edition is essential
- Full clean valid UK driving licence (proof of zero penalties and no previous convictions essential)
· Significant experience of leading and delivering network improvements and transition into operational services
· Experience and / or in a similar sector (including operations or technology) would be beneficial but not required.
· Ability to have robust/difficult conversations with customer, third party suppliers and stakeholders
· Proven capability in leading a team and managing change with a track record in building strong service networks.
· Guide and mentor junior and mid-level resources and oversee development projects undertaken by them.
· Solutions oriented individual, proactive in providing pragmatic advice and innovative services delivery.
· Experience within the highways industry would be advantageous.
· CSCS/ECS Card and SMSTS qualified (would be advantageous)
· Knowledge & understanding of health & safety legislation including The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
· Is a self-starter who can manage their own time
· Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (MS Word, Excel, Project)
· Experience of using Safety Culture, Site Tracker, and Microsoft Dynamics would be advantageous
