POSITION:   Fall Play Stage Manager

LOCATION:  Ellensburg High School

REPORTS TO:  Fall Play Director / Activities Coordinator / Principal

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Stage Manager serves as both a production leader and educational advisor for the EHS Fall Play backstage team. This position is responsible for assisting the Director and Producer with the scheduling, organization, and technical execution of rehearsals and performances, while simultaneously teaching and mentoring students in stage management and backstage leadership. The Stage Manager collaborates with the Director and Producer to ensure the production runs safely and smoothly, models professional theatre practices, and fosters a positive, collaborative learning environment for students.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Educational and Advisory

  • Mentor and supervise student Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers, providing guidance in leadership, communication, organization, and technical theatre practices.
  • Teach students how to record blocking, maintain cue books, manage props/set changes, and run rehearsals.
  • Work with Director and Producer to provide students with increasing levels of responsibility while ensuring the success and safety of the production.
  • Model professional communication with students, staff, parents, and volunteers.

Production and Operational

  • Coordinate with the Producer and Director to maintain and distribute rehearsal and performance schedules.
  • Attend rehearsals, production meetings, and technical rehearsals, recording blocking, stage directions, and technical requirements as requested by Director and/or Producer.
  • Coordinate with Student SM to organize and oversee backstage operations, including set changes, prop placement, and crew assignments.
  • Assist Student SM to create and maintain the master prompt book and cue sheets.
  • Oversee trained student stage managers calling technical cues during performances).
  • Supervise Assistant Stage Managers and work with Student SM and Director to delegate responsibilities appropriately.
  • Coordinate with Producer to ensure rehearsal and performance spaces are opened, closed, and maintained safely.
  • Maintain a first aid and emergency kit in coordination with program leadership.
  • Lead the post-show strike, coordinating cast, crew, and volunteers in the breakdown and clean-up process.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:

  • Must be 21 year of age or older.
  • Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check.
  • Must have a current First Aid and CPR Certificate and be versed in related preventative health and training standards.
  • Must complete Blood Borne Pathogen and Sexual Harassment Training.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in professional or educational theatre stage management required.
  • Ability to mentor and teach high school students with patience, clarity, and encouragement.
  • Familiarity with technical theatre operations (lighting, sound, backstage management).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a positive, supportive manner with production staff, student participants, and parents.
  • Ability to work as a responsible member of a staff in full cooperation with the Activities Coordinator.
