TITLE: Program Supervisor, Institute for Learning in Retirement
DEPARTMENT: Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD)
Function
The ILR Program Supervisor manages the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR), a dynamic community of lifelong learners age 55+. The Supervisor is responsible for coordinating semester programming, supporting instructors and students, overseeing registration and scheduling, and promoting the program both on campus and in the community. This position blends program administration, event coordination, and community engagement. The ideal candidate is organized, technically savvy, and eager to build connections with older adult learners. While program-specific systems can be taught, success in this role depends on strong communication skills, initiative, and the ability to create a welcoming learning environment.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, Continuing Education and Workforce Development
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Planning & Coordination
Organize ILR courses and events for fall and spring semesters.
Coordinate scheduling, room requests, and registration timelines.
Assist in reviewing and preparing course proposals and instructor materials.
Work with staff and instructors to ensure smooth program operations.
Instructor Support & Recruitment
Recruit, onboard, and support new and returning instructors.
Provide guidance on classroom technology and program expectations.
Maintain positive relationships with instructors and assist with evaluations.
Student Support & Community Engagement
Serve as the primary contact for ILR students, answering questions and resolving concerns.
Foster an inclusive, supportive environment for learners age 55+.
Represent ILR at community events and help strengthen partnerships.
Catalog, Marketing & Promotion
Contribute to the development and editing of the ILR course catalog.
Collaborate on program marketing through Constant Contact, flyers, social media, and outreach events.
Promote ILR programs within Bergen Community College and the wider community.
Administrative & Technical Functions
Use registration and scheduling systems (training provided) such as Elevate, Colleague, and Ad Astra.
Maintain records of courses, rosters, attendance, and communications.
Prepare semester updates and reports as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Community Focus: Strong interest in working with older adult learners and supporting a welcoming program culture.
Technical Skills: Comfortable with databases, scheduling tools, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and email platforms.
Organization: Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with accuracy.
Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Problem-Solving: Flexible, resourceful, and able to respond to challenges during courses and events.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
3+ years of experience in education, program coordination, or community engagement.
Experience with older adult learners or continuing education programs is a plus.
Employment Terms
Work Schedule: Part-time, 15–24 hours per week; flexibility required during registration, semester launches, and events.
Compensation: $25–$32 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
Benefits: Sick time off in accordance with Bergen Community College policy.
