About the Department

The Biotechnology instructor will be an instrumental team player in teaching, growing enrollment, engaging students and providing input and expertise in developing our Center of Excellence and curriculum.  This individual will instruct a variety of classes in Biotechnology and Biology coursework. Develops course materials and provides training specifically to meet Biotech industry needs within Alamance County and the region, while delivering high-quality instruction in online, blended and face-to-face formats. Advises and tutors biotechnology students as needed, while handling a variety of student issues including make-up tests, retests, attendance and tardy issues, etc. Prepares engaging lectures, lab activities and instructor demonstrations while creating an inclusive learning environment. Participates in content-specific professional development and stays abreast of advances in the field. Builds relationships with area industry, departments within the college and other stakeholders as needed to ensure the relevancy of the biotechnology program. Actively promotes the Biotechnology program and the Center of Excellence inside and outside the institution. Assists with the writing and participation in educational/technology grants as requested, as well as participates in the annual program review and student learning outcome assessments for the program. This is a grant funded position and will expire December 31, 2026.

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Instruction of undergraduate courses in biotechnology and biology, and /or continuing education certification courses as needed. Courses may be delivered during the day, evening or weekends depending on course schedule.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and events, outreach activities as well as events we are invited to participate in within the community. 
  •  Continuous professional development to maintain current knowledge of the life sciences industry.
  • Support for departmental projects, participation in grant activities per individual grant proposals, and involvement with ensuring the department meets grant deliverables. 
  • Will take on additional duties if department head delegates duties in their absence such as: Advising of all biotechnology and continuing education students, Biowork Recruitment and lead instruction, Maintain connections with industry partners and four year institutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in teaching discipline

OR

Associate’s degree AND demonstrated industry experience and/or demonstrated competencies in the teaching discipline.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Industry experience/competencies/licensure must be documented and support teaching courses based upon catalog description. State/Industry certifications may be used to demonstrate specific experience/competencies in teaching various courses in the teaching discipline.
