Position Summary:

Performs research, development, and production support of the propellant, and booster formulations that are used in the automotive airbag inflators manufactured by ARC. Responsible for conducting analytical testing, operating propellant processing equipment, analyzing experimental data, and contributing to technical reports and operating procedures. Position will include both hands-on laboratory work and computer/analysis-based work. The specific ratio of lab/desk work will vary based on the needs and priorities of the team. This is an entry-level position. This position requires regular handling of energetic and hazardous materials, with strict adherence to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and full compliance with ATF, RCRA, and DOT regulations.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field and zero (0) years of experience; or an associate/ technical degree with at least two (2) years of relevant experience.
  •  Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret technical instructions and drawings.
  •  Manual dexterity and ability to stand for extended periods (up to eight hours)
  •  Basic computer proficiency, with emphasis on spreadsheet functions (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Etc.)
  •  Excellent communication, organizational and multitasking skills.
  •  Ability to pass a BATF background check.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  •  Conducts routine analytical testing (e.g. DSC, FTIR, moisture, particle size, sieve stack, density, crush strength).
  •  Performs specialized testing in collaboration with other scientists and engineers in the team
  •  Operates propellant processing equipment (milling, fluid bed granulation/drying, high shear granulation, tablet pressing).
  •  Assists in the development of new processes and procedures with the propellant team.
  •  Troubleshoots laboratory analytical and processing equipment.
  •  Assembles, maintains, and tests Closed Chamber Combustion (CCC) units; provides accurate and timely data.
  •  Prepares and analyzes test data to support laboratory assessments.
  •  Drafts and revises work instructions and standard operating procedures.
  •  Provides cross-training to technicians and team members.
  •  Maintains energetics inventory and magazines in compliance with ATF regulations.
  •  Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
  •  Follows all safety protocols and promotes a safe workplace culture.
  •  Supports other North American ARC facilities as needed.
  •  Performs additional duties as assigned.

Work Environment / Conditions / Physical Demands:

Work will take place in a combination laboratory/ shop environment. Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays and be on-call on occasion. While performing the duties of this job, employees will be exposed to mechanical or chemical processes requiring the use of personal protective equipment. The employee may encounter controlled air conditions with frequent air changes, environmental exposure, lift up to 45 pounds, and will be in close contact with energetic material during normal work activities.
