Job Summary
The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I–II to join the Water & Sewer Department’s Transmission and Distribution Division. Reporting to the Maintenance Team Supervisor, this position is responsible for ensuring the proper operation of equipment and assets associated with valves, fire hydrants, and other components of the potable water system.
The Maintenance Mechanic performs daily preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on fire hydrants, PRV vaults and assemblies, hydraulic valve-turning equipment, and air vacs. Duties include vault and safety equipment inspections, confined space entry, utility locating, damage prevention, and proactive leak detection. The role also involves working with pumps, blowers, compressors, and generators, often in proximity to electrical switchgear and controls.
Experience, Education, and Skills
Minimum Requirements
All Levels:
High school diploma or equivalent
Current Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
Level I:
Current Colorado Water Professional Distribution 1 certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
Zero to one year of experience operating a small water system
Basic mechanical and electrical skills; familiarity with hand tools and equipment maintenance
Level II:
Current Colorado Water Professional Distribution II certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
Six (6) months to two (2) years of experience operating a small water system
Six (6) months to one (1) year of SCADA experience
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
AND
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Preferred
Vocational or technical training from a trade school related to industrial, mechanical, or electrical systems environment.
Experience with Utility locating and 811 law preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of mechanical components and equipment, including bearings, seals, packing, belts, valves, and pressure-reducing valves (PRVs).
- Knowledge of specialized equipment, tools, and safety procedures, including confined space entry, trench safety, and traffic control.
- Skill in operating tools, vehicles, and equipment; reading maps, blueprints, and utility locates; and maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance, detect and repair system issues, and respond to routine and emergency situations.
- Ability to follow instructions, work safely and effectively as part of a crew or independently, and train or mentor less experienced staff.
Travel
Category B-Regular Local/Field Based Travel: This position requires regular travel within the County and nearby cities. Employees frequently travel to field sites, client locations, or other City buildings as part of their job duties. Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.
Essential Functions
- Install, maintain, and repair water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, manholes, meters, pumps, PRV vaults/assemblies, air vacs, and related infrastructure.
- Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment such as tapping machines, valve operators, hydraulic valve-turning equipment, pumps, blowers, compressors, generators, sewer jetters, compactors, and power/hand tools.
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance, including leak detection, flushing, cleaning, testing, inspections, and vault servicing.
- Inspect vaults, buried assets, and safety equipment; perform confined space entries in compliance with safety regulations.
- Read and interpret maps, blueprints, drawings, and utility locates to identify and access system components.
- Conduct excavation, trenching, shoring, and site restoration in compliance with worksite and safety standards.
- Set up traffic control devices and follow established work zone safety procedures.
- Locate underground utilities using maps, records, and detection equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair leaks, breaks, and other system failures to restore safe and reliable service.
- Produce accurate written records of work performed, materials used, and equipment operated.
- Clean, maintain, and perform basic service on assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Work safely in industrial environments, including around 480-volt power, rotating equipment, and pressurized systems.
- Perform housekeeping and other assigned duties to maintain safe and efficient work areas.
- Respond to after-hours water and sewer emergencies as assigned.

Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
- Frequent exposure to wastewater, chemicals, dust, fumes, gases, odors, airborne particles/pathogens, and other hazardous materials.
- Tasks often require confined space entry into manholes, vaults, and trenches, following strict safety procedures.
- Regular exposure to traffic, heavy machinery, construction equipment, uneven or slippery surfaces, wet/muddy conditions, vibration, and loud noise.
- Required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and participate in on-call rotations and emergency call-ins.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, climb, crawl, dig, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods while loading/unloading tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Physical strength and stamina to lift, push, pull, and carry 20–50 lbs. routinely and heavier loads (up to 100 lbs., such as manhole covers) with assistance.
- Ability to enter and work safely in confined spaces, including manholes, vaults, and trenches, and move across rough, uneven, or slippery surfaces.
- Manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and specialized equipment with precision.
- Sufficient vision to read maps, identify materials, operate equipment, and locate water and sewer infrastructure.
- Clear and effective verbal communication skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
