POSITION: Communications Technology Apprentice

 

LOCATION: Calvert County Public Schools, Department of Information Technology, Administrative Services Building located at 1305 Dares Beach Road, Prince Frederick, MD 20678

 

POSITION SUMMARY: This apprenticeship offers students the opportunity to acquire valuable job skills, explore a career path in communications or technology, and develop a professional portfolio. The student apprentice will support website and social media updates and perform accessibility reviews. Provide customer support and troubleshooting for CCPS software, websites, and social media platforms.

 

REPORTS TO:    Supervisor of Information Technology

 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Preferred coursework in communications, graphic design, technology, or journalism.
  2. Approval to participate in the Maryland Apprenticeship Program offered by CCPS.
  3. Must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in Calvert County Public Schools.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:  (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.)

At the time of the application, the candidate must have the following:

  1. Ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks accurately.
  2. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  3. Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  4. Excellent customer service skills with a focus on responsiveness and problem-solving.
  5. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  6. Experience using design and video editing software.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency with computers and software applications, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn new technology tools quickly and apply them effectively in a professional setting.
  8. Experience creating and posting content on social media platforms.
  9. Familiarity with cameras and basic photography/videography techniques.
  10. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  11. Regular, on-time attendance and reliability.
  12. Ability to think critically, concentrate, and interact positively with others.
  13. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
  14. Demonstrated success in completing tasks similar to the responsibilities listed below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist with CCPS website updates and social media postings.
  2. Support implementation of the CCPS Communications plan.
  3. Suggest improvements to website design, layout, and navigation.
  4. Create communication materials such as publications, flyers, graphics, and promotional content.
  5. Develop communications that highlight CCPS students, staff, and events.
  6. Edit video highlights and upload them to the District YouTube Channel.
  7. Provide support with CCPS software, including the creation of documentation for end users.
  8. Serve as customer support for schools and departments by troubleshooting and responding to inquiries related to the website, social media platforms, and other CCPS software.
  9. Take photographs and video at assigned CCPS events.
  10. Assume increasing levels of responsibility as the apprenticeship progresses.

OTHER DUTIES: (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.)

  1. Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director or Supervisor of Information Technology or designee.
  2. Some evening and weekend work may be necessary to cover events and activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Position may require periods of standing and walking, lifting up to 25 pounds, and occasional outdoor work. For at least 50% of work hours, the individual will be working indoors at a computer desk located in an office

environment. Some occasional travel within Calvert County may be required.

 

UNUSUAL DEMANDS:   none

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:    Apprentice assignment. Hours reimbursed at the current Maryland State minimum wage rate.  Work hours are coordinated with the supervisor and will vary from week to week with no more than 20 hours per week and a maximum of 450 hours over the term of employment. If chosen for this position, the candidate is encouraged to enroll in direct deposit.

 

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

 

EVALUATION:   Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the apprenticeship agreement.

 

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION: October 1, 2025.  The position will end on June 15, 2026 or once the apprentice has completed a total of 450 on-the-job hours.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

 

State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
