Join the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, as we are seeking a pediatric research expert (Professor level) to lead our growing research program.

The Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics will provide oversight, leadership and guidance in all aspects of the research enterprise of the Department of Pediatrics.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Vice Chair for Research will lead the pursuit of innovation and excellence in all research activities of the Department of Pediatrics and will provide visionary oversight of departmental research programs. 

  • Advise the Department Chair regarding new directions and issues of immediate concern related to the research programs.

  • Maintain thorough familiarity with all aspects of the departmental research enterprise.

    • Develop and communicate approved departmental policies and practices related to the research missions.

    • Promote intra- and interdepartmental, interdisciplinary and intercollegiate research efforts.

    • Develop and monitor research mentorship programs for faculty members.

    • Participate fully in the development and execution of department strategies.

·         The Vice Chair for Research will represent the Department in his/her area(s) of responsibility.

o   Participate in relevant and appropriate committees in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Maryland School of Medicine, University of Maryland Children’s Hospital

·         The Vice Chair for Research will participate actively and fully as a member of the Department Chair’s Executive Council.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Evaluate research programs within the department in order to:

  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness, viability and status of each.

  • Develop and propose to Department Chair a departmental strategic plan for research.

  • Provide insight and leadership for developing new research programs.

  • Guide the recruitment of research faculty.

  • Review and make recommendations regarding research proposals and start up packages for faculty recruitment.

  • Serve as the primary departmental representative and liaison for research activities involving other departments within the School of Medicine and other schools within the University.

  • Lead and appoint the Department of Pediatrics Research Committee, including investigators representing the spectrum of research including basic science, translational studies, clinical trials and health services research.

  • Create and maintain a database of all faculty research projects that are available for students/residents to participate in.  Work with Vice Chair of Education to maintain the database and notify students/residents of opportunities.

  • Lead initiatives in the professional development of all research faculty and work closely with the Department Chair regarding appointments and promotions.

  • Serve as the liaison to faculty for matters related to departmental infrastructure required for effective pre- and post-grant accounting and administration, and for streamlined proposal development.

  • Provide oversight to ensure effective use of all research space assigned to the department, including policy development to guide space assignment, and recommend laboratory upgrades and facilitate renovation projects.

  • Monitor overall departmental performance in research.

  • Ensure departmental compliance with all relevant and appropriate University policies and procedures, and regulations promulgated by various regulatory agencies involved in research oversight.

  • Oversee acquisition, maintenance and availability of shared equipment.

  • Seek institutional research resources and determine how they will serve the goals of the department of pediatrics

  • Work with the department Chief Administrative Officer and Research Administrator on matters under scope of responsibility as appropriate.
