The Custodian Lead directs and participates in our team’s custodial maintenance to ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary facility, while performing manual cleaning, minor repairs, and providing work direction, oversight, and training to other custodians.  Responsibilities include creating work schedules, inspecting work, ensuring safe and economical use of supplies, equipment, and labor, ordering and maintenance of supplies and equipment.  Facility includes all buildings, parking areas, and grounds of Amsted Rail – Petersburg.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To accomplish this job successfully, an individual may be requested to complete all or some of the listed responsibilities.  All selected responsibilities must be completed satisfactorily to meet the essential functions of the job. 

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership:  Coordinate and assign tasks to other custodians, providing instructions and training on proper cleaning methods.
  • Work Oversight:  Inspect custodial work to ensure it meets standards, check the accuracy of timesheets, and provide feedback to team members.
  • Facility Maintenance:  Perform a wide range of cleaning tasks, including sanitizing surfaces in break rooms, sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, trash collection and disposal, maintenance of parking lots and other areas of our facility. 
  • Minor Repairs & Maintenance:  Conduct minor repairs to equipment and facilities, assist with room/facility and event setups, and monitor the proper functioning of systems like heating and ventilation. 
  • Safety & Security:  Enforce safety policies and procedures and report hazards appropriately as well as maintain building and site security during all activities.   
  • Reporting:  Document inspections and maintenance needs, reporting them to the appropriate maintenance personnel or supervisor.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Leadership and Communication:  Ability to direct and motivate a team and communicate clearly with staff, supervisors, and facility users.
  • Technical Knowledge:  Understanding of cleaning techniques and the proper and safe use of various cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, walking, lifting, and moving furniture/equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Safety Awareness:  Knowledge of safety protocols, including handling hazardous materials and emergency procedures, to maintain a safe environment.
  • Organization and Time Management:  Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage tasks to ensure all duties are completed effectively within set timeframes.
  • Computer Skills:  Ability to enter in requests, place orders in our systems, and send and receive emails .
