Part-Time, Temporary Teaching Artist

 

 

Department: School Programs                                                    Salary Grade:  2H


Position Reports To: Director of School Programs Exempt/Non: Non-Exempt


Revision Date:   September, 2025                       


Primary Function: The Teaching Artist is responsible for delivering after school arts-based programming for 9th-12th grade students from Central High School to prepare for the Student Art Show hosted by the Barnes’s School Programs team. 

 

Additional in-classroom support will be provided by the 7th grade Program Specialist and by Central High School art teachers. 



Job Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, art education, or related field and 1 year of work experience in the arts, community arts, or cultural institutions OR high school/some college and 2 years' work experience in the arts, community arts, or cultural institutions;
  • Experience developing art activities and lessons geared toward high school students or young adults.  
  • Ability to work across diverse groups, including external program partners and teachers in learning environments.
  • Strong interest in community partnerships and arts as a pathway for equity and social justice. 
  • Strong written and communication skills. 
  • Work Schedule:

            October 27 3:10pm-4:10pm, Central High School, plus (1) one hour of prep time. 

            November 10 3:10pm-4:10pm, Central High School, plus (1) one hour of prep time.

            December 7 9am-1pm, Barnes Foundation. 

 

Clearances:  

  • Criminal Background-National
  • Criminal Background for work with children -National Child Abuse, FBI, PA PATCH.


Physical Activities to Perform Essential Functions:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

 


Moving: 

Ability to stand and walk for 4-hour shifts with minimal rest breaks.  

Approximately 90%+ of worked time is spent standing or moving around the work area. 

                          Ability to occasionally transport up to 25 lbs. of equipment or supplies.  



Vision Requirements:

This position requires extended time on the computer.

 


Communication Requirements:   

Clearly communicate in person, by phone, and by video conference.  Communicate with others in conversational and written English. 

 


Working Conditions: 

              Position operates in hybrid work setting comprised of the Barnes’ Philadelphia campus, Central High School and remote work setting indicated by the employee at their documented home address.



Job Responsibilities:

  • The teaching artist, with support from the School Programs staff, co-develops and delivers lessons on watercolor painting. 
  • Collaboratively develops lessons so that they meet the requirements of the Student Art Show.
  • Delivers these lessons at Central High School. 
  • Demonstrates and explains artmaking techniques and artist’s decision-making within lessons.
  • Communicates with and provides feedback to the School Programs department regarding success levels of lessons; through email, progress notes, verbal conversations, and by completing evaluation tools.
  • Supports classroom and school-wide norms.
  • Maintains safe learning environments for students through assisting in classroom management.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
