The Database Administrator plays a critical role in ensuring the stability, security, and performance of the organization’s database systems. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing databases that support Baylor Genetics’ mission of delivering cutting-edge genetic testing services. The role requires curiosity, attention to detail, technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate with technologists and business stakeholders at all levels. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience as a Database Administrator in enterprise-scale environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- Strong working knowledge of modern database best practices.
- Experience with multiple database architectures and technologies (e.g., SQL, MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL).
- Proven ability to design, diagram, and present high-level and detailed database architectures.
- Experience collaborating closely with development, infrastructure, and management teams.
- Familiarity with highly virtualized public and private cloud environments.
- Strong documentation skills, including the ability to produce clear diagrams and technical guides.
- Self-management skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering value in a fast-paced environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Own the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise-scale, high-availability database systems.
- Lead database architecture reviews and provide strategic recommendations for scalability, modernization, and cost efficiency.
- Conduct capacity planning and forecast future database resource needs based on business growth.
- Partner with security teams to ensure compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, and other relevant regulations.
- Implement advanced monitoring, alerting, and disaster recovery systems to proactively address performance, availability, and security issues.
- Mentor and guide developers on database best practices, performance tuning, and secure coding standards.
- Design and implement databases in accordance with business requirements and user needs.
- Define users, manage permissions, and ensure secure, timely data distribution.
- Perform regular tests and evaluations to ensure data security, privacy, integrity, and recoverability.
- Monitor performance, apply patches, and upgrade database systems as needed.
- Optimize both back-end data organization and front-end accessibility for applications and reporting.
- Collaborate with technical, application, and operational teams to ensure database integrity and security.
- Commission and install new database-related applications or customize existing ones for optimal performance.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for database systems, processes, and configurations.
- Evaluate and recommend emerging database technologies to improve performance, resilience, and scalability.
