JOB TITLE: Police Officer/School Resource Officer
REPORTS TO: Chief of Police
EMPLOYMENT AND FLSA STATUS: Classified/Non-Exempt/Hourly
POSITION PURPOSE: Creates and maintains a safe and secure school climate and learning environment for students, staff and visitors. Employees in this position are responsible for patrolling the campus, and maintaining security inside of school buildings and grounds in accordance with prescribed district policies and procedures. Provides a range of security services to the Corporation as directed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work closely with school administration and local police in an effort to provide and maintain a safe environment
Provide a safe and secure environment for students, staff and guests on campus
Establishes and maintains positive rapport with students. Serves as a positive role model at all times
Assists in developing and maintaining good working relationships with local police, fire and rescue departments
Patrol and monitor hallways, stairwells, restrooms, cafeterias, outside facilities and other public unsupervised areas of the school to ensure safety
Responds to calls for service, determines the action needed and takes the appropriate action
Communicates clearly, treating with respect, dignity and the utmost professionalism at all times, individuals inside or outside the school setting including students, staff and adults from diverse social and economic backgrounds
Seeks assistance from an administrator or SRO for situations beyond their ability or authority
Protect the confidentiality of student records and information about staff, and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal requirements.
Assist in ensuring a smooth traffic flow of students through the hallways and assisting students with on-time arrival to class and other assigned locations.
Assist with supervision of students during breakfast and lunch periods, and with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
Assist with the removal of disruptive students from classes on an as needed basis.
Assist the police, professional staff and emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations.
Assist visitors with directions and checking proper identification.
Challenge unauthorized visitors (with assistance from police) and escort them to the exit of the building.
Direct traffic and parking on campus; check vehicles for proper parking identification and determine whether vehicles are parked in restricted areas.
Maintain required paperwork and reports to ensure all complaints are filed with law enforcement.
Ensure all doors and gates are opened and locked at designated times determined by administrative staff.
Notify police and building administration of any emergency, or potentially dangerous or unusual situations.
Notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of student substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, suicide, or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or anabolic steroids.
Report any discipline infractions to administrative staff.
Comply with federal, state, local and district laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment as assigned by the School Safety Officer’s supervisor, and assist other personnel as necessary for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective working environment.
Additional duties may include: patrol and set up for after school events; assist with fire alarm and crisis emergency responsibilities; monitor surveillance equipment.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

Demonstrates ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Google Docs).
Demonstrates ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.

Possesses effective writing and verbal communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift and/or carry 25 lbs.
Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
Ability to see for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed matter.
Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
Ability to operate office equipment.
Ability to reach in all directions.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
*The School Resource Officer will also be provided with a cell phone stipend. EVALUATION:
