About the Department

Duties include:

  • Supervises and provides technical supervision for a segment of the county's vehicle fleet/equipment repair and maintenance program.
  • Plans, directs and coordinates the maintenance and repair of automotive, bus, fire, construction and industrial vehicles and equipment; or plans, coordinates and implements the quality control inspection of vehicles and equipment for the department, to include all DVS facility locations.
  • Plans and schedules workload and assigns work to staff.
  • Reviews work in progress to ensure acceptable repair and maintenance procedures are being used.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance to diagnose, repair and replace parts.
  • Ensures required parts, materials, tools, and equipment are provided.
  • Provides training opportunities for subordinates and evaluates their performance and abilities.
  • Monitors and enforces preventive maintenance, emission inspection and safety inspection schedules.

Notes:
  • This position is considered "essential personnel" and therefore will be required to report to work regardless of the emergency situation (weather, transportation, or other emergency/disaster)
  • Location: This position is located at the Newington Maintenance Facility, Evening Medium Equipment/Bus Section.
  • Schedule: The work schedule for this position will be 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • **Based on the needs of the agency, this incumbent may be relocated to a different facility and/or work schedule (minimum 30-day advanced notice)
  • This announcement may be used to fill future full-time fleet service supervisor positions at other Department of Vehicle Services (DVS) locations - Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox - depending on the needs of the hiring department.

Position Duties

  • Plans, schedules, and supervises fleet technicians engaged in skilled transmission, electrical, and engine work and repairing and maintaining combustion, hybrid, and electric engines;
  • Utilizes a computerized maintenance management system to schedule work, monitor employee productivity, order parts, maintain records, and prepare reports;
  • Analyses and assesses the cause of equipment failures and takes corrective action;
  • Reviews work orders and commercial invoices for accuracy and completeness;
  • Coordinates maintenance activities with other departments;
  • Remains current on safety regulations and procedures and instructs subordinates on correct safety practices to prevent workplace accidents;
  • Assists with troubleshooting complex engine and transmission problems;
  • Investigates, documents, and reports accidents, injuries, and safety issues;
  • Prepares high dollar repair estimates for Fleet Service Administrator’s review;
  • Performs performance evaluations, coaching, employee discipline, counseling, and training;
  • Ensures all equipment, tools, and machinery are properly operated and maintained, and contacts contractors for repairs when necessary.


Other Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

High School diploma or G.E.D. issued by a state department of education; plus, five years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment; plus, one year of experience at a lead or supervisory level.


CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class B (VA))

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experienced as a supervisor or team lead.
  • Minimum of four Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in a specific series such as Automotive & Light Truck, Medium-Heavy Truck Certifications.
  • ASE Master certification in School Bus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Current Virginia Safety State Inspection Certificate and/or a Virginia Emission Inspection License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary, however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying items under 20 pounds in weight. Ability to operate commercial vehicles. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
