Monday - Friday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM (will vary per needs of the work unit)

MAJOR FUNCTION

This is manual and supervisory work involving advanced skills in various maintenance and construction tasks throughout the County Parks. Employees in this class perform as lead workers on projects and/or crews. Employees in this class may also perform and/or oversee tasks requiring advanced technical skills such as irrigation system design and installation and repair of athletic field layout requiring the use of a transit.

Duties include all types of grounds maintenance, athletic field maintenance, janitorial tasks and field supervision of staff. Duties may also include the operation of vehicles requiring a class “B” CDL with air brake endorsement. Instructions are received orally or in written form and assignments are performed with considerable independence. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor who reviews work for timely completion, efficient use of manpower, equipment and materials, and quality workmanship.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Supervision and Leadership

  • Plan, assign and review the work of Parks Maintenance Workers, Parks Caretakers, attendants, volunteers, and contract workers engaged in grounds maintenance and park construction activities.

  • Participate in the training of subordinate staff in equipment operation and maintenance practices, including part-time staff as needed.

Operations and Maintenance

  • Supervise and participate in the operation of mowers, tractors, edgers and other equipment.

  • Perform trash removal, restroom and pavilion cleaning, raking leaves, athletic field maintenance and repair, and other grounds maintenance tasks.

  • Operate various light to heavy-duty construction and grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Program, install, and repair manual and computerized irrigation systems.

  • Use a transit for various athletic field repairs and construction.

  • Assemble and repair bleachers, picnic tables, fences and other park furnishings.

Equipment and Materials

  • Request equipment, materials and supplies required for work assignments.

  • Train employees in proper use of equipment and materials.

  • Operate or supervise the operation of small and medium duty equipment and tools, including string trimmers, edgers, sod cutters, pressure washers, and concrete saws.

Other Duties

  • Additional related duties and responsibilities may be assigned as deemed appropriate by an administrative manager.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • The County Parks system.

  • The operation, maintenance and proper use of grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to grounds maintenance work.

Ability to:

  • Operate vehicles and truck/trailer combinations requiring a Class “B” CDL with air brake endorsement.

  • Operate various types of light and heavy equipment used in the maintenance and construction of parks.

  • Operate power tools and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance operations.

  • Understand, follow and complete oral and written instructions.

  • Supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

  • Read and write reports.

  • Perform basic mathematical functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide).

  • Use a transit to establish simple angles and elevations.

  • Perform job tasks in all weather and environmental conditions.

  • Establish and maintain effective public relations.

  • Use basic computer software and Computerized Maintenance System programs.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 25 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds occasionally.

  • Must be capable of wearing and using routine safety equipment (vehicle safety belts, safety glasses, respirators, hearing protection, etc.).

  • Must be capable of working various schedules for short or long-term assignments.

  • May be required to change primary reporting site for short or long-term assignments.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in grounds maintenance or related work, including some experience in supervising/overseeing the work of others.

  • Must have met the mandatory training requirements of a Parks Caretaker II as defined by the Division.

  • Must possess a valid Florida Class "B" CDL with air brake endorsement at the time of application.

  • Must have Trenching & Excavation Competent Person certification in accordance with current OSHA regulations.

  • Must have a current Florida Ornamental and Turf Pest Control license.

  • Must have completed a basic supervisory training program.

  • Must have completed a basic safety training program through the County OED division or equivalent training.

  • A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required licensure and certifications.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Weekend and evening work schedules may be a requirement of this position.

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
