Work Schedule: 15-20 hours per week; shifts based on operational need of the organization. This position will be working on campus. May work up to 29 hours during break weeks. May work early mornings, late nights, early weekends and during academic breaks.

OVERVIEW

Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 26,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. The ASI Facility Operations department is one of the largest departments in ASI. The department consists of four units, BRIC Operations, BSC Operations, Custodial Services and Maintenance, that are responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, day to day operations, safety and emergency management of the BRIC and the BSC. The Facility Operations department strives to transform our facilities to a welcoming home for all and is committed to providing exceptional customer service experiences that lead to a sense of belonging in all ASI facilities.

Maintenance Services is responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the Bronco Student Center and Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex by providing services to keep the buildings safe and operational for students, staff and community. Services include: Preventative & Corrective Maintenance, Installation/Repairs/Troubleshooting, Building and Equipment Inspections, HVAC, Plumbing, Painting, Electrical, Building Controls, Fire and Line Safety, Carpentry, and After Hour Emergencies.

POSITION DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of the Supervising Building Services Engineer the Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing general skilled trades work including the on-going maintenance repair, preventive facilities work of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, life and safety equipment and systems, and water systems, as well as carpentry, perform routine, complex assignments. Considerable independent judgement and decision-making throughout the Bronco Student Center (BSC) and the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC). Must be available to attend all mandatory organization, department, unit wide and position specific trainings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly assigned building walk-through(s) performing general inspection, repairs, preventative maintenance, to monitor all appropriate equipment
  • Operate, maintain, repair, and inspect HVAC and split systems, emergency generators, water systems (including water softeners, domestic boilers, and chilled water), solar heating, lighting, plumbing and sewer systems, and life and safety equipment
  • Assist with performing general maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work on a wide range of heating, ventilating, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, air conditioning, water systems and general equipment. 
  • Assist with preventive maintenance on all shop and shop-related equipment; including shop organization upkeep
  • Assist with cleaning of the roof drains, gutters, air vents, registers, radiators, including removal of leaf debris.
  • Perform initial inspection of assigned maintenance request and make recommendations for repairs
  • Assist with variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks, to include, but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, furnishing, door hardware and closers, fixtures and equipment
  • Promote and model a safe working environment in compliance with Cal/OSHA and OSHA standards, ASI and University policies, as well as state/local and federal regulations; support emergency response plan for all ASI buildings
  • Assist with monitoring building automation systems and control panels to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in the HVAC systems, lighting, and economizer ventilation systems to optimize energy usage and user comfort;
  • Report work completed in the of the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) 
  • Assist in reporting inventory for all unit supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Report monthly utility meter readings
  • Provide support during facility emergency response and safety situations
  • Makes recommendations as needed for repairs, supplies, and tools 
  • Assist with on-site vendor support when necessary 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience in painting, dry wall, electrical and plumbing repair, preferred
  • Experience in carpentry and other related fields, preferred 
  • Ability to lift  up to 75 pounds 
  • Presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintain a high standard of customer service
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively with minimal supervision
  • Complete a Pulmonary Function Test & Respiratory Medical Evaluation (cost covered by ASI upon offer to hire) with an outcome of “acceptable without work limitations” and a Respirator Fit Test to use an N95 respirator as needed. Facial hair must not interfere with seal of mask and complete initial and annual respirator training 
  • CPR for the Lay Responder, First Aid & Bloodborne Pathogens, within the first 30 days of employment (provided by ASI)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing 
  • Ability to operate an office work station, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and other software  
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check)

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY 

Employment with ASI is open to any Cal Poly Pomona student who is eligible to work and has the legal right to work in the United States. In addition, student employees must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6.0 units (undergraduate) and 4.0 units (graduate), international student employees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12.0 units (undergraduate) and 6.0 units (graduate) at the end of the add-drop period. Student employees are required to have a minimum overall and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0 and be in good academic standing with the University. Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire. Exceptions to the unit load requirement are allowed during the summer term and for students who have applied for graduation for the current term. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear; manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and verbal communication; use of office equipment: telephones, calculator, copier and fax. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, and lift up to 45 pounds.
