Fiber/Network Technician Apprentice

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are ready to learn and start a career in fiber networking. Join our talented team of telecommunications experts and professionals as a Fiber/Network Technician Apprentice! In this role, you will support the safety, reliability, and performance of all Colorado Springs Utilities’ fiber, microwave, and telecommunications infrastructure.
Please note that this position is part of a formal Fiber/Network Technician Apprenticeship administered by Colorado Springs Utilities and is a 3-year, six-step on-the-job learning and technical instructional program. Each of the 3 years is separated into "blocks", containing self-study lessons and identifying the required assessments and task performance evaluations (TPEs). The participant progresses through the program by successfully filling the needed blocks and completing the required review processes.
As such, the pay for this position will begin at $29.06/hour and will progress throughout the apprenticeship based on the pay schedule below (subject to change):
- Step 1 - $29.06/hr. (1st year)
- Step 2 - $30.03/hr. (1st year)
- Step 3 - $31.19/hr. (2nd year)
- Step 4 - $32.55/hr. (2nd year)
- Step 5 - $34.10/hr. (3rd year)
- Step 6 - $36.04/hr. (3rd year)
- Turnout - Journey-Level Fiber/Network Tech - $38.75/hr.

You will be directly responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a variety of components of our fiber optic network.
What will you be doing?
- Installing, splicing, and repairing fiber for Colorado Springs Utilities
- Installing, terminating, splicing, testing, certifying, and documenting fiber optic cabling, and all related fiber optic maintenance activities
- Reading and interpreting fiber splicing diagrams, prints, specifications, work scopes, and fiber optic color code charts
- Installing fiber closures, terminations, connectors, and patch panels
- Locating and validating conduit for fiber path feasibility, mounting fiber termination panels and splicing cabinets, and bonding and grounding fiber cables according to specifications
- Inspecting field conditions and identifying problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures

- A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- A Valid Colorado Driver's License is required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
- Positions in this class typically require exposure to all weather conditions.
