This role reports into our Pennsauken, NJ manufacturing plant.
WHAT WE NEED
The Sanitation Manager is responsible for leading the site’s sanitation program for low-acid canned foods (LACF) and high-acid aseptic beverages. This role will design, implement, and continuously improve sanitation processes, ensuring full compliance with FDA, GFSI, and customer requirements. The Sanitation Manager will develop team capabilities, ensure operational excellence, and foster a culture of proactive food safety.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Sanitation Program Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive sanitation program aligned with LACF (21 CFR Part 113), acidified foods (21 CFR Part 114), and aseptic beverage regulatory requirements.
- Write, implement, and maintain Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) for all equipment and processing areas.
- Lead sanitation validation and verification activities, including allergen and pathogen control programs.
- Partner with Quality Assurance to integrate sanitation into HACCP, Food Safety Plans, and prerequisite programs.
- Partner with Operations to effectively and efficiently execute CIP and SIP procedures.
- Facilitate the execution of the site’s Integrated Pest Management Program.
- Manage key vendor relationships and performance, and maintain appropriate inventories of chemicals, PPE, and other supplies.
Design and Implement Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS)
- Develop a comprehensive Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) that outlines all cleaning and sanitation activities across the facility, including equipment, process lines, support areas, and utilities.
- Define frequencies, responsibilities, methods, and verification procedures for each cleaning activity in alignment with LACF, acidified foods, and aseptic beverage regulatory requirements.
- Implement the MSS across all shifts, ensuring clear communication, training, and compliance with operational schedules.
- Integrate MSS into HACCP plans, Food Safety Plans, and prerequisite programs, ensuring sanitation activities support food safety and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor execution, track compliance, and use metrics (e.g., ATP swabs, microbial testing, audit findings) to continuously optimize the MSS.
- Partner with Quality, Production, and Maintenance teams to identify opportunities for efficiency, automation, or process improvement within the MSS framework.
Team Development & Leadership
- Recruit, train, and mentor the sanitation team, fostering skill growth and leadership capability.
- Establish clear goals, performance metrics, and accountability for sanitation staff.
- Conduct regular training in chemical handling, cleaning methods, allergen control, and safety practices.
- As the Subject Matter Expert, provide coaching and training on cleaning and sanitation programs to site personnel.
Compliance & Audit Readiness
- Maintain full compliance with FDA, OSHA, EPA, and state/local regulations.
- Ensure documentation and record-keeping are audit-ready at all times.
- Act as the sanitation lead during regulatory inspections and customer audits.
Continuous Improvement
- Track key sanitation performance indicators (ATP swabs, microbiological counts, cleaning efficiency).
- Investigate sanitation-related nonconformances and lead root cause/corrective action processes.
- Research and implement improved sanitation technologies, equipment, and processes.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in food manufacturing (or closely related industry) sanitation, including CIP/COP systems.
- Strong knowledge of food safety standards (FDA, GFSI (SQF), HACCP, GMP).
- Experience being the subject matter expert in sanitation programs, audits, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven leadership skills, including cross-functionally/outside of direct management.
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring, allergen control, and microbiological testing.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management abilities.
