Reports to: Histology Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Type: Full-time 

Location: Roseville Histology Lab

Schedule: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM

No weekends or holidays. Hours may be negotiable based on candidate availability

Pay Range: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour commensurate with experience

Job Summary

The Grossing Technician is responsible for the accurate and timely gross examination of dermatologic specimens. This includes the dissection, description, and sampling of tissue specimens for histological processing. The Grossing Technician must adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures, as well as maintain a clean and safe work environment.


Job Responsibilities: 

· Coordinates and prioritizes workflow to ensure timely testing.

· Reviews select policies as required (i.e. Annual review). Recommends policy changes and assists with communication of policy changes to testing staff.

· Participates in CLIA survey readiness activities.

· Recommends process improvements.

· Uses knowledge of quality control to review and evaluate test or instrument performance.

· Performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment or instruments.

· Notifies Histology Technician or Histology Manager of equipment malfunctions and maintains competencies with all equipment.

· Performs advanced troubleshooting in area(s) of expertise. Uses problem solving skills when assessing test result accuracy and reliability to identify causes for unexpected test results.

· Participates in all relevant quality assurance (AQ) activities, including reporting sources of error.

· Assists with supply inventory.

· Attends and participates in department and other relevant meetings.

· Participates in continuing education.

· Use equipment and instruments including microscopes, microtomes, cryostats, and other lab equipment.

· Receive and accession specimens by labeling requisitions, specimen containers, and cassettes. 

· Prepare Mohs sections for immediate examination according to procedure.

· Performs grossing/dissection of skin and Mohs specimens using skills and knowledge of tissue type and structure while maintaining orientation and specimen integrity.

· Embeds tissue with proper orientation and performs microtomy of embedded tissue with minimal artifacts.

· Performs solution preparation with accuracy and proper labeling.

· Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with policies, procedures, and complies with all State, Federal, and professional regulations.

 Required Skills/Abilities: 

· Strong attention to detail

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. 

· Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures. 


Supervisory Responsibilities: 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 


Education and Experience:

· Associate or bachelor’s degree in a science related field required

· At minimum 60 semester hours of college credits – 24 of these hours must be in science courses, which must include:

      o 6 hours in Chemistry

      o 6 hours in Biology

      o 12 additional hours in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Laboratory Technology in any combination

· Previous medical dermatology and laboratory experience preferred


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a clinic setting.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; talk, hear and smell. The employee must be able to sit for 90% of the workday. The employee must be able to lift or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Be able to lift 40 pounds.
