SUMMARY: This internship offers a unique opportunity for a junior or senior-level Chemical Engineering student to gain hands-on experience in process engineering within a renewable diesel production facility. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers to support plant operations, troubleshoot process issues, and contribute to real-world projects focused on safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Through this experience, interns will develop technical skills, gain exposure to industry-standard engineering documentation and tools and build a strong foundation for a career in oil & gas or renewable fuels refining.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Under the guidance of experienced process engineers, the intern will:

  • Assist in monitoring plant operations and analyzing process data.
  • Support troubleshooting efforts and contribute to process optimization initiatives.
  • Participate in reviewing engineering documents such as PFDs, P&IDs, and equipment specifications.
  • Help evaluate opportunities for improving safety, efficiency, and throughput.
  • Contribute to small-scale project development, including scope definition and cost analysis.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Production and Maintenance.
  • Participate in field walks and control room visits to gain exposure to plant operations and environmental compliance.
  • Prepare and deliver an end-of-summer presentation summarizing key project contributions, learnings, and overall internship experience to engineering and leadership teams.

 

REQUIREMENTS: A successful candidate must possess the ability to perform each essential duty to a satisfactory level.   • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering (junior or senior standing).
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Strong interest in renewable fuels, refining, or oil & gas industries.
  • Basic understanding of process engineering principles (e.g., heat transfer, fluid dynamics).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; familiarity with CADD is a plus.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements for this role include the ability to sit and work on computer-based programs for extended periods, regularly walk, stand, and reach with hands and arms, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The candidate must be able to climb ladders or platforms and enter confined spaces, possess specific vision abilities such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the candidate must be able to wear all required safety equipment, occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions, which may include extreme heat or cold, and perform regular field walks and control room visits to monitor environmental compliance and improve environmental awareness.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This role involves both office and field work.

 

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: Days/M-F. The hours and days of work are established by departmental needs and at the discretion of management. Occasional changes in schedule may be required as special circumstances arise.
