Our Sports, Tourism, Facilities & Programs have a new and exciting opportunity as an Athletics Grounds Specialist. This position performs skilled and advanced duties in the maintenance and upkeep of athletic fields and facilities throughout Sarasota County. This position will operate various equipment and tools, involve moderate to heavy manual labor, and consist of routine and repetitive duties that may be performed without immediate supervision. Performs skilled and advanced maintenance duties. Provides customer service to the park patrons.About the Position
In this role, you will...
- Performance of skilled routine maintenance and repairs of athletic fields, surfaces and grounds utilizing commercial-grade mowers and other specialized equipment. Work will be performed primarily with diesel- or gas-powered commercial-grade landscape mowers such as Toro Outcross with Tow Behind Field Mower, Toro 4000D, 4500D, Reel Mower, and Toro 72 “Z” mower.
- Perform proper maintenance techniques to ensure a safe playable surface, including maintaining infield skin, infield lips, baselines, warning tracks, pitching mounds, and home plate areas. Includes regular dragging, screen dragging, watering, mowing, edging, and trimming. Able to use all types of hand tools, rakes, shovels, mound tamps, etc.
- Routine Park maintenance includes hand weeding, mulching, digging, turf trimming, tree trimming, hand collection and disposal of litter, removal and installation of plant materials and trees, and driving on roads and vegetated maintenance areas.
- Assist with cultural practices and renovations of athletic fields in coordination with the renovations team. May operate special equipment such as a combinator, pull behind vacuum, aerators, top dressers, roller, sod cutter, sweepers, tractors, walking aerators, and any other equipment pertaining to renovations.
- May assist with irrigation repairs and IPM practices.
- Safely operate, fuel, perform general maintenance, change mower blades, clean equipment, perform small-engine repairs, and perform safety checks on all listed equipment. These tasks will require the use of pneumatic, power, and hand tools.
- Assist with the transportation of equipment to and from park locations, and the delivery of fuel to various parks throughout the county.
- Maintain records of work performed, including submitting time to the work management system. Completes electronic reporting forms, including inspection reports, safety checks, incident forms, etc.
About the Schedule
Work Hours:
Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
Work schedules may vary due to split shifts, rotations, on-call, emergencies, etc.

About You
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and two years of experience, education, or training. Can use a combination of education, experience, and training in landscape maintenance.
Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Athletic Field or Facility maintenance preferred.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five years.

Starting Pay Range: $20.10/hour (Step 1)
