About the Department

The Land Information & Tax Services department (LITS) is seeking an Accountant to join their Property Tax Division to perform accounting work related to the distribution of property taxes collections and property tax reporting.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487, and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:

  • Prepare settlements, balance funds, and distribute tax collections and other payments as required by State Statute.
  • Manually enter repetitive accounting related data. 
  • Prepare standard reports for internal and external requests from multiple agencies and taxing jurisdictions.
  • Assist county departments, government agencies, external auditors, and vendors with routine requests concerning property tax accounting related tasks and issues.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconciliations related to property tax according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 
  • Participate in special projects and aid units, departments, and other government agencies on basic audit and accounting related matters. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned. 

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Four years or more of accounting activities experience.
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, business administration with an emphasis in accounting or other specialty area related to the position.
Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Working with Minnesota property taxes and Minnesota property tax laws.
    • Using accounting software such as PeopleSoft and/or Cognos. 
    • Performing repetitive data entry manually using Microsoft Excel and/or Access database.
    • Importing and/or exporting large data sets between different software applications.
    • Performing month and year-end reconciling.
    • Working with internal/external auditors to review financial records and resolve issues.
  • Ability to: 
    • Have high mathematical aptitude, capable of preforming arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately.
    • Organize, execute, and deliver timely results on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    • Maintain confidentiality and work with protected information.
    • Work effectively in a team environment.
    • Write or document procedures or manuals proficiently.
    • Apply and adapt established accounting procedures to a variety of accounting transactions.

About the department:
Land Information and Tax Services is a department within the Resident Services Line of Business of Hennepin County that covers foundational responsibilities of government: land surveying, land recording, property tax collection and distribution. We also provide critical infrastructure and innovation support to departments throughout Resident Services.
