About the Department
The City of West Hollywood invites your application for the position of Recreation Assistant.
As a Recreation Assistant, you will:
- Monitor park grounds and facilities.
- Enforce park rules and regulations.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public and park patrons.
- Be knowledgeable and informative of the City’s recreation programs, services, and events.
- Support Recreation staff in the set up and break down of events and programs.
Please note:
- The City's Recreation Services Division operates Sunday through Saturday from 8am to 10pm. Typically, employees in this classification are scheduled to work approximately 20 hours per week.
- The work schedule for these positions may require irregular hours, various shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and/or on-call status, and may vary depending on assigned program and facility.
- The assigned work location may be either the West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center or Plummer Park.
- Staff in this role are expected to be available for a minimum of 3 days per week, including at least one night shift and one weekend shift.

Position Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
- Serves as park ambassador to ensure park spaces and facilities are safe and welcoming to the community.
- Monitors the park, park facilities and patrons, including: unlocking and locking park and facilities; inspecting facilities; enforcing rules and regulations.
- Provides direct assistance and customer service to park patrons; provides information and appropriate assistance concerning department programs, park facility information and related activities and events.
- Monitors assigned park areas; identifies hazards; observes patrons to ensure compliance with park safety rules and regulations; reports safety concerns and issues; contacts safety services and public safety agencies for public safety issues.
- Writes incident reports and documents shift activities.
- Makes initial response to service complaints; seeks resolution to minor disputes among park visitors and responds to requests for service.
- Handles a wide variety of public contact situations.
- Establishes positive working relationships with City staff and the general public.
- Assists with meeting and event set up and strike functions, including moving furniture and equipment and cleaning up.
- Orders and maintains equipment and program supplies; orders office and cleaning supplies.
- Performs cleaning and light maintenance duties, as needed.

- Provides direct assistance and customer service functions to general public and patrons.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED (desirable)
- One year of progressively responsible related experience; or
- Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- CPR/First Aid Certification (desirable)

- While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to extreme temperatures, the sun, dirt and/or dust.
