About the Department
The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated candidate with experience in medical laboratory testing for a Medical Laboratory Technician position. Work involves responsibilities such as operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, evaluating quality control, proficiency testing, performing various clinical, micro-biological, and environmental laboratory related QC.
This position assists with keeping up with the demands on the laboratory to ensure appropriate turnaround times for testing so that providers can ensure appropriate treatment regimen.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm; with rotating Thursdays 8:00am - 8:00pm. Schedule will be adjusted accordingly to maintain a 40-hour work week.
Position Duties
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Working knowledge of test procedures performed in the laboratory.
Working knowledge of applicable laboratory instruments.
Ability to perform a variety of standardized laboratory tests accurately and independently.
Ability to follow established procedures and keep accurate records.
Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED and three years of medical laboratory experience;
or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and one year of medical laboratory experience;
or graduation from an associate degree program of medical technology.
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Valid driver's license required.
Other Qualifications
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performs quality control procedures on instruments used on a daily basis; runs a control and reports results for evaluation and comparison.
Receives and prepares samples for running CBC's; samples are analyzed by the use of appropriate instruments; examines samples microscopically to determine kind, size and shapes of white and red cells; records all findings.
Performs a variety of testing for the STD Clinic to include gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia testing.
Prepares water samples for a series of testing required and regulated by the State; performs all testing and records results.
Spends a small percentage of time at a mini-lab location performing venipuncture, urinalysis, and stat syphilis testing.
Performs a variety of other standardized testing.
Performs related duties as required.
Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
