About the Department
The Classification and Compensation Analyst is a Civil Service position, located with the Department of Human Resources, and performs professional, technical, and analytical work supporting effective administration of Metro’s classification and compensation systems. The Analyst works with our Class/Comp and Data Analytics teams to provide research, analysis, and recommendations that drive equitable pay practices, accurate job classifications, and informed decision-making.
Generally, this position works a hybrid work schedule with 2 days in the office and 3 days virtual after training. Additional in office days may be required as needed or directed.

- Analyze data with critical thinking and attention to detail
- Perform advanced Excel actions utilizing pivot tables, lookups, and other formulas
- Research, gather, and analyze data from various sources to inform recommendations
- Communicate complex information effectively both orally and in writing, without relying on AI tools
- Handle multiple projects, prioritize, and adapt to meet business needs
- Identify problems and propose solutions

Position Duties
- Provide support to Class/Comp and Data Analytics teams.
- Research market pay data; use spreadsheet and data analysis techniques to assess results and market trends.
- Match internal jobs to survey jobs to ensure appropriate market comparisons.
- Conduct research on policies and practices in Class/Comp and other HR areas; prepare and present summary reports to leadership.
- Interview employees and supervisory staff to collect job information to determine job duties and proper classification of positions.
- Analyze positions using information obtained from questionnaires, interviews, other written documentation, and other verbal sources.
- Assess jobs for FLSA exemption status.
- Create and/or revise job descriptions and compensation rules and policies.
- Present Class/Comp-related information to the Civil Service Commission, both in writing and verbally at meetings.
- Prepare reports and assist with data analytics.
- Respond to salary surveys from other municipalities and third parties.
- Review and verify compliance of merit plans.
- Assist in processing year end salary and/or classification changes to the HRIS.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Other Qualifications
- Experience with Excel’s advanced functions (pivot tables, LOOKUPs, other formulas)
- Professional or student experience with compensation analysis or job evaluation
- Experience with HRIS systems, market data tools, and/or job description management tools
- Professional HR certification and/or student HR association involvement
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver written reports and verbal presentations
