Position Purpose

A Kitchen Steward, also known as a Dishwasher or Kitchen Assistant, plays a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen of a restaurant, hotel, or other food service establishment. They are responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the kitchen by handling dishwashing, cleaning tasks, and assisting the kitchen staff as needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Dishwashing: Operate commercial dishwashing machines or wash dishes, glassware, utensils, and cooking equipment by hand. Ensure proper cleaning, sanitization, and drying of all items in compliance with health and safety standards.
  2. Kitchen Cleaning: Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, including countertops, sinks, stovetops, ovens, and food preparation areas. Sweep and mop floors, remove trash, and maintain overall cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen.
  3. Utensil and Equipment Maintenance: Sort, stack, and store cleaned dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment in their designated areas. Ensure that all items are properly stored, organized, and ready for use by the kitchen staff.
  4. Stocking and Inventory: Monitor and restock kitchen supplies, such as dishwashing detergent, cleaning chemicals, and other consumables. Notify the appropriate personnel when inventory levels are low to ensure uninterrupted kitchen operations.
  5. Waste Management: Dispose of kitchen waste properly, including food scraps, trash, and recycling materials. Follow waste management procedures and maintain cleanliness in waste disposal areas.
  6. Assisting Kitchen Staff: Provide support to the kitchen staff by assisting with food preparation tasks, such as peeling vegetables, chopping ingredients, or assembling dishes. Collaborate with the kitchen team to ensure smooth and efficient workflow.
  7. Safety and Sanitation: Adhere to health and safety regulations, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals, safe operation of kitchen equipment, and following established sanitation practices. Report any safety hazards or maintenance issues to the appropriate personnel.
  8. Organization and Time Management: Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet operational demands. Work efficiently to maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, ensuring quick turnaround of dishes and utensils for the kitchen staff.
  9. Teamwork and Communication: Collaborate with the kitchen team and communicate effectively to ensure a cohesive and efficient work environment. Assist in coordinating dishwashing and cleaning duties to meet operational needs.
  10. Flexibility: Adapt to changing work demands and be willing to assist in different areas of the kitchen as required. This may include assisting with food delivery, storage, or other kitchen-related tasks
Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a dishwasher or kitchen assistant is preferred.
  • Knowledge of proper dishwashing techniques and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of dishwashing and cleaning tasks efficiently.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand for extended periods and lift heavy loads.
  • Basic understanding of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Attention to detail to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
