Summary: The Starter is one of the most visible employees of the facility. This position is tasked with directing the flow of traffic on the course, enforcing facility rules, assisting members and guests with course etiquette, alerting golf shop staff to any issues on the golf courses, promoting the facility and its events, and managing pace of play. Due to the nature of the position, the starter/ranger must be pleasant but firm at the same time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operates the starter’s booth in the highest professional manner.
• Promote the facility programs, events, and image to the membership.
• Assure the orderly flow of play in accordance with the posted tee times.
• Maintain adequate supply of scorecards, pencils, tees, ball markers, etc. at starters booth.
• Exhibit welcoming “first contact” with members. Seek ways to create an enjoyable experience moment for golfers during their round.
• Check with golf shop and be aware of all unusual or special instructions, such as cart path only, etc.
• Be in possession of the daily tee sheet and monitor for updates throughout the shift.
• Make sure all equipment; cart, radio, water stations, etc. are working correctly.
• Check rest stations for stock of divot mix bottles, as well as cleanliness of bathrooms. Report issues to the Professional Staff.
• Accurate record-keeping of the number of players daily.
• Communicate with the golf shop on a regular basis (25-30 minutes), even if there is nothing to report, in case there are possible changes to duties.
• Assist members and guests with any on-course problems – alert appropriate supervisor if necessary.
• Enforce facility rules and regulations.
• Assist in keeping course clean of debris as you move around the course. Call attention to golf shop of any maintenance issues that need addressing.
• Keep players on pace-of-play schedule and report any problems to golf shop.
• Be prepared for inclement weather and understand necessary procedures when siren sounds.
• Assist other outside staff as needed.
• Assist members with finding a game when necessary.
• The position may perform additional duties as needed/required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Computer: Ability to proficiently use Microsoft office, (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Language: Ability to read, write and comprehend correspondence, memos, and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees. 

Mathematics: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.

Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. 

Other: 

• Possess strong organizational, written and time management skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, stand and lift up to 25 pounds. 
• Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time. 
• Moderate noise level in the work environment.
