Sr. Nurse Practitioner - Neurosurgery presso University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc.

Under general supervision, assists leadership in supporting and managing the nurse practitioner group within a specific service line. Responsible for diagnosing and treating patients in collaboration with physician colleagues. Provides continuity of patient care by facilitating and coordinating communication between the health care team, patient and patient’s family. Coordinates care to ensure quality, cost effective care; appropriate length of stay; and patient safety. Serves as link integrating relevant research and best practices.

Detailed Description:

1. Clinical Leadership/Outcomes: Serves as Program coordinator for cranial and NIS teams and collaborates with leadership to facilitate development, support, and management of the clinical programs within a specific service line. This includes improving program workflow and improving patient throughput.
2. Clinical Responsibilities: Comprehensive history of physical for new and returning patients. Orders, obtains, and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests, establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings. Promotes understanding of disease processes in areas of specialty/program.
3. Professional Development and Organizational Leadership: Serves on department, hospital, and community committees.
4. Research Responsibilities: Serves as a clinical sub trial investigator participating in or coordinating phases of industry sponsored research.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS      

Clinical Leadership/Outcomes

• Assists the Clinical Program Manager and collaborates with the Medical Director in facilitating the development, support and management of the NP group within a specific service line. This includes improving patient throughput, patient and staff education, patient satisfaction as well as activities for inpatient settings such as early patient discharge and participation in hospital task forces.
• Monitors competency, documentation and outcomes of care given by Nurse Practitioners within service line. Identifies ways to facilitate working relationships among all levels of staff to meet patient care requirements.
• Is responsible for creating nurse practitioner schedules and ensuring appropriate staffing patterns and coverage within a service line.
• Coordinates work assignments, training and evaluation in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Interviews and recommends hiring of Nurse Practitioners within service line.
• Provides input into the annual performance evaluations of staff and recommends disciplinary measures when necessary.
• Coordinates orientation for Nurse Practitioners within service line.
• Develops dept. level education, including in-services and teaching materials.

Clinical Responsibilities:

• In collaboration with the attending physician and in accordance with the Written Agreement as approved by the Joint Committee for Nurse Practitioners, provides day to day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare provider team.
• Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted/scheduled to service/practice setting.
• Orders, obtains and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests.
• Establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings.
• Designs, orders and documents appropriate treatment plans/plans of care including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results.
• Initiates protocols/clinical pathways, evaluates the plan of care ensuring timely intervention.
• Performs invasive procedures.
• Collaborates with attendings and residents regarding admission, discharge and transfer decisions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Master of Science Degree with completion of a primary care Nurse Practitioner program. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland. Certified in area of specialty. (Copy of written agreement with physician signed by the physician and nurse practitioner and written approval by the Joint Committee for Nurse Practitioners pursuant to COMAR 10.27.07.06A.)
• DEA and CDS eligible
• CPR required
• BLS required
• ACLS and/or other relevant certifications as required by the department
• Three years experience as a Nurse Practitioner is required
• Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty
• Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
• Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters
• Maintains updated mandatory training
• Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.
