The Position
In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organization (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. This position is located at the Institute of Human Biology (Zurich site), a department within pRED, where the establishment of human model systems for drug discovery and personalized medicine is a primary focus. At the IHB, we bring together areas of tissue engineering, microtechnologies, organoid development and phenotyping to fuel scientific discovery.
Internship mission
We are offering a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a laboratory intern to work on ex vivo model development and drug testing using patient-derived tissue explant cultures. In this role, you will contribute to our efforts on harmonizing explants for long term culture with de novo vascularization on chip, for asking questions in cancer biology, as well as drug testing. You will optimize novel culture workflows in conjunction with existing quantitative methods such a s flow cytometry, microscopy and sequencing. In this position, you will have the unique opportunity to help push explant technology forward while also interacting with the wider IHB and pRED community.
Your Impact
Supporting our scientific efforts through hands-on lab work and troubleshooting.
Analyzing and interpreting data.
Contributing to data presentation and manuscript/SOP writing
Your Profile
You enjoy being part of a team in a dynamic, inclusive environment which gives you full accountability for your own contributions and development. You are goal-oriented, resourceful and flexible in problem solving. You are used to working with colleagues of different expertise levels and you take a keen interest in the scientific aspect of the projects you contribute to. You have experience in cell culture assay execution and are excited to adapt these assays for the specific task at hand. You are an active listener, are open and clear when communicating and easily connect with people around you.
Specifically, you:
Hold a BSc in biology, bioengineering or related field
Have solid experience in cell culture, preferably in the context of primary material and organoids.
Are fluent in English and have excellent documentation skills.
Additionally, any of the following are beneficial:
Experience with on-chip/microsluidic cultures
Experience with endothelial cell cultures
Knowledge of immunostaining and confocal microscopy (on live, fixed or cleared samples)
Experience in multichannel flow cytometry
