Job Title: Registered Staff Nurse - Emergency Room Primary Function and Relationship to Total Organization:  

Provides direct and/or indirect nursing care for individual patients. Communicates with and on behalf of the patients and coordinates patient care with other health team members. Organizes those aspects of nursing care for which she/he is accountable. 

 

Reports to: Emergency Room Director 

 

Supervises: LPN's, EMT's, ER Techs, Paramedics 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Patient admission interviews are completed within 30 minutes of triage. Nursing assessment includes an adequate account of past medical history and the event that brought the patient to the emergency department. 
  2. Triages patient and categorizes appropriately. 
  3. Anticipates changes in patient condition and recognizes the need for and performs emergency life-saving measures. 
  4. Nursing care is implemented as stated in written protocol or appropriate standards of care. 
  5. Prepares patient for examination by the physician and provides assistance as required. 
  6. Obtains all necessary signatures authorizing emergency treatment and release of information, payment source and any other consents applicable to specific situations.  
  7. Provides patient education as indicated related to illness, management of the disease process, preparation for admission, discharge or transfer according to their needs and abilities. 
  8. Documents the patient condition, nursing interventions, and the patient's response to intervention in the Electronic Medical Record. 
  9. Supervises patient care given by other team members in the Emergency Department. Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to ensure quality patient care. 
  10. Assesses the patient's current lab values and the implications of common lab values. 
  11. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards and documents patient response. 
  12. Accompanies patient to other departments or nursing units as necessary. 
  13. Participates in non-direct patient care activities including education activities, quality improvement, standards development and review, hospital/nursing committees and other related activities. 
  14. Complies with hospital and nursing service policies. 
  15. Assists in the orientation and development of Nursing/ER personnel and students. 
  16. Demonstrates willingness to support staffing and scheduling needs. 
  17. Performs functions other that described above due to extenuating circumstances. 
  18. Trauma Alert Duties: Directs and organizes the efforts of the trauma team members while assisting to initially assess and stabilize the patient/patients. 
  19. Maintains skills for computerization of documentation and medication delivery.

Minimum educational requirements: 

Graduate of a state approved nursing program. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa. Successful completion of BCLS within 3 months of employment and ACLS, TNCC, PALS and ENPC within the first year of employment. 

 

Work environment: 

Works in well-lighted, air-conditioned nursing unit. Noise levels vary. May come in contact with hazardous chemicals or treatment modalities.
