The Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) welcomes internal applications for the Database Engineer through midnight on September 25, 2025.

Job Summary

This is professional work in ensuring the integrity and availability of Jacksonville Aviation Authority’s (JAA’s) databases and accompanying software. The role may also require providing backup support for server infrastructure systems.  The work requires advanced knowledge of Microsoft SQL, data tools (Excel, forms, etc.), SQL reporting and other databases such as Oracle, MySQL, Progress, etc.  Contacts with others require skills in understanding and influencing people and are important in analyzing and resolving system database operational problems. The work is performed in an office environment. Operates computers and other standard office equipment. After hours and on-call work is required occasionally. The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are covered by the clearly defined processes. The worker plans and organizes the work, determines priorities, and the work is reviewed after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness and adherence to established practices and techniques.

Qualifications

Essential Functions

• Designs, installs, monitors, maintains and performance-tunes databases while ensuring high levels of data availability.
• Oversees and ensures adherence to database policies/procedures.
• Authors and maintains database documentation.
• Develops corporate reports from databases using various reporting tools; including but not limited to SSRS, Oracle Report Writer, Crystal Reports, and application integrated SQL-like reporting systems
• Performs database back-ups.
• Monitors database stability and performance.
• Provides tuning, problem solving and capacity planning as necessary.
• Authors, improves and maintains database administration scripts.
• Troubleshooting and support for server infrastructure systems including, Citrix, VMware, and Windows Server OS, etc. in a backup support role for primary systems engineers.
• Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Advanced working knowledge of SQL SSRS reporting and current and previous Microsoft SQL databases.

• Advanced working knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques for managing current MS-SQL database environments, including disaster recovery and high availability techniques such as log shipping, replication, database mirroring, clustering and always-on.
• Solid understanding of fundamental business intelligence, data warehouse design, development methodologies and best practices.
• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, database programming, stored procedures, triggers, etc.
• Knowledge of database concepts, table structures indexes and query optimization.
• Knowledge of common database management standards and protocols.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability design and implement solutions that address complex business challenges.
• Superior analytical skills and the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential issues.
• Ability to navigate MS Windows server environment and VMWare environments.
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
• Experience working with PowerBI, PowerApps, and Sharepoint preferred.
• Experience working with GLWand, Spreadsheet Server, and Questica preferred.

Required Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or closely related field and
• Seven (7) years of related IT experience or
• An equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

Preferred Education & Experience

• Experience in an ITIL v. 3 environment

Licenses & Certifications

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or equivalent required
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
• Florida Class E Driver’s License may be required and must be maintained.

Physical Demands

The physical demands consist of moving from one work location to another, sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time and may involve lifting objects weighing up to 15 pounds. Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
