About the Department
The purpose of this classification is to enforce fire prevention and life safety codes of the State of Georgia and Cobb County by performing routine building inspections and code enforcement activities.
Position Duties
Performs inspection of single use existing commercial and residential building premises and building structures for fire hazards and conformance with County fire codes.
Interprets various laws, ordinances, and regulations in enforcing safety regulations and fire prevention codes in accordance with national, state and county standards.
Advises and instructs owners and occupants of buildings in fire prevention methods in the removal of fire hazards, and makes recommendations for reducing potential hazards.
Conducts code enforcement activities: investigates complaints of unsafe conditions of construction or occupancy or other complaints; identifies code violations and determines required corrective action; meets with property, business owners and other individuals to discuss violations; issues code compliance notices and official correction notices to inform violators of discrepancies and compliance deadlines; testifies in court as needed; and performs follow-up site inspections as needed.
May perform the functions of a firefighter in support of the department's objective and mission as directed: and may respond to emergency scenes.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; supplemented by three years of experience in fire prevention and suppression functions.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or bright/dim lights.
