Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

The position is responsible for routine Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) compliance management of The Geysers geothermal power generation facilities.  While this position will serve as the main point of contact for two power islands, the work will encompass many working groups including departments such as projects, central maintenance, and steamfield. Responsible for complex, technical work in a wide range of EHS disciplines to maintain compliance with the organization’s EHS standards, federal and state regulatory requirements, and consensus industry standards.  Reviews and interprets EHS rules and regulations and advises management accordingly.  Has complete understanding of EHS principles, concepts, practices, standards and regulations.  Coordinates compliance assurance activities with multi-media environmental programs, including air emissions, waste management, and all associated monitoring, reporting, and other permit requirements.  Reviews plant EHS procedures and makes recommendations for updates according to laws and regulations and best practices. Champions for event-free operations and risk recognition/mitigation in environmental and safety areas, including Calpine Cardinal Safety Rules and occupational safety compliance. Investigates EHS incidents including accidents/injuries, environmental upsets, and near miss events. Supports employee training related to EHS compliance and emergency preparedness.  Prepares and maintains all necessary EHS compliance documents and records.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of major programs which can include safety for general industry, Waste Management, Air and SPCC Compliance.
  • Partner with operations to build employee engagement by active participation in plant tailboards and operational meetings.
  • Drive EHS risk recognition and mitigation by assessing and communicating physical, operational, and regulatory risks related to EHS matters. Participate in audits (internal and external) and facilitate closure of corrective actions.
  • Support continuous learning through identification of EHS best practices and timely and relevant communications.
  • Serve as a catalyst for continuous improvement through EHS assessments, event and trend analyses.
  • Track EHS compliance status and ensure timely and accurate completion of task requirements.
  • Review collection and recordkeeping practices related to EHS matters.
  • Compile and submit internal and external reports as specified by EHS requirements.
  • Makes decisions regarding own work, often in ambiguous situations; makes recommendations regarding own function/discipline.
  • Works on problems of moderate complexity.
  • Uses independent judgment within defined policies and practices. Interprets guidelines; selects methods, techniques, and analytical approach.
  • Little instruction on day-to-day work, general instructions on new assignments.
  • May be designated project or technical lead for an ongoing process or short-term project within the EHS Department.
  • Reports to the EHS Manager at the Geysers. This is an in-person full-time position adhering to the Geysers four 10-hr Monday to Thursday schedule (6:30am to 5pm).

  • Uses independent judgment requiring in-depth analysis of variable factors. Collaborates with senior professionals in selection of methods, techniques, and analytical approach.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, preferably in Engineering or Science. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Requires 5+ years’ experience in EHS, in an industrial environment such as chemical manufacturing. Experience in the power industry is preferred.
  • Solid, working knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to all Environmental, Health and Safety, with an emphasis in Health and Safety.
  • Must have valid CA Driver’s license.
  • Ability to overnight travel 10% of the time and utilize company vehicle to travel between the local Geysers facilities daily.

Salary Information

  • Salary Range - $95,162.00 - $121,31.00
