About the Role
We are seeking a Facility Manager / Trainer to be responsible for all daily activities required for the proper care and maintenance of the laboratory animal care and use program for our public health federal customer's facility. This position will also serve as backup support in animal care areas in the absence of floor supervisors.
In addition, the Facility Manager / Trainer will develop and deliver effective training programs to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working with animal colonies at federal government facilities.
This is an entirely onsite position at our customer's location in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is contingent on contract award.
Responsibilities
- Provide oversight and supervision of staff performing husbandry, feeding, cagewash, sanitation, and enrichment for small animal species (and large animals as needed), including scheduling assignments and ensuring tasks are completed as directed.
- Ensure that all required functions are carried out appropriately, including receiving animals, feeding and watering, handling and restraint, health surveillance, husbandry, equipment maintenance, supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties. Assist with animal care and husbandry duties as needed.
- Oversee cagewash equipment monitoring and accompanying documentation.
- Engage with federal customer and lab manager to identify and prioritize training needs and requirements, and to ensure that requirements are met for compliance training and documentation.
- Develop, review, and maintain required training forms, materials, guides, employee training folders, and training database in accordance with requirements.
- Design, schedule and deliver training programs employees accomplish the work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and facility policies.
- Track trainings, conduct assessments and document student progress.
- Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are adhered to by the husbandry and cagewash staff and suggest modifications to program management.
- Develop and conduct Quality Control schedules and inspections.
- Generate QA/QC reports based on findings and evaluate corrective actions.
- Monitor performance over time, perform remedial training as necessary based on results.
- Assist with site visits and other inspections.
- Maintain comprehensive records and documentation of all activities and results.
- Provide information as needed to maintain adequate supply inventories (chemicals, food, bedding, etc.)
- Provide assistance with procedures, clinical support or other veterinarian directed treatments, as needed.
- Perform animal transportation duties if necessary.
- Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to management.
- Coordinate and schedule procedures, trainings and meetings as needed.
- Participate in maintenance of record keeping systems including, but not limited to, notes, records and other important data.
- Work flexible hours to ensure animal care is carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines to include weekend and holiday coverage.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Experience and Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility or biomedical research facility required, including 1 year of experience in an animal research training position.
- Experience developing and delivering staff training curriculum to consist of hands-on demonstrations, instructional classrooms, or a combination of these.
- Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, animal facility operations, occupational safety, biosafety and biohazard containment.
- Experience in areas of small animal and regulated species facilities management, clinical case management, technical procedures, breeding, barrier management, and data management highly desired.
- Leadership experience preferred.
- Must have a working knowledge of all levels of biohazard containment. Experience in ABSL–3 or ABSL-4 laboratories highly desired.
- Must understand and follow appropriate regulatory guidelines, SOPs, policies, safety procedures, and quality assurance standards.
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Be able to don and doff the required Personal Protective Equipment.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Ability to identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions according to guidelines.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and ensure standard policies and practices are followed.
- Ability to obtain government clearance.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clear and satisfactory driving record.
- Must be able to wear a respirator.
- Will be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
Education and Training
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.
- Must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work flexible hours to ensure animal care is carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines to include weekend and holiday coverage.
- Ability to lift up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) frequently.
- Strength and agility to capture, restrain, and carry medium-sized mammals without causing harm to the animal or self.
- Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals.
- Walking, reaching, bending, and stooping.
- May be exposed to Hazardous materials and will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.
- Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement, including Hepatitis B, among others.
- Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing may be required.
- Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.
