Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for the right person as an Assistant Plant Manager. This position reports to the Plant Manager and is responsible for developing and leading a high performing team of salaried and hourly team members. This team will deliver 1) world-class safety, 2) products that regularly meet or exceed our quality and cost standards, 3) new bridge projects ahead of our customer’s time targets, 4) plans to improve the plant’s profitability, 5) high team member engagement, and 6) a plant culture that enables the growth of our team members and the plant.
The successful Assistant Plant Manager will be a good mentor to team members, will find ways to improve quality and will implement best practices across the team. This team member will provide effective leadership and promote positive working relationships across all functions.
Safety
- Serves as an example of leadership by actively participating in the EHS program.
- Works with the facility’s EHS Manager to ensure a safe working environment. Ensures EHS policies and guidelines are met.
- Observes, reports and corrects behaviors that are unsafe. Leads by example on a daily basis.
- Coaches, trains, communicates and monitors employees’ performance on safety programs. Has a keen eye to spot opportunities for success in safety.
Quality
- Drives continuous improvement from top down to achieve plant objectives.
- Knows the proper way to fabricate our product and ensures others on the team do as well.
- Partners with our training leader to build the team’s overall capabilities. Is committed to continuous learning and delivers products that exceed our customer’s stringent build requirements.
- Utilizes 8D and other problem-solving tools to eliminate root causes of quality concerns so they are resolved once and for all.
Product Delivery and Operational Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains manufacturing operations plans to include all program requirements, labor hours, production costs, etc.
- Provides guidance for improving operational performance to Production Managers and their team members. Manages to operational targets on a daily basis.
- Drives execution of operating plans and priorities.
- Frequently shares structured updates to cross-functional team members and leadership on the performance of the plant. Owns the plant’s operating outcomes.
- Is able to top-grade the plant’s talent by hiring, coaching and mentoring hourly and salaried team members – builds the organization with A+ talent.
- Manages employee performance – regularly communicates what is needed and manages to that target, and course corrects when needed to be successful.
- Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative and functional environment where teamwork is essential to accomplish aggressive objectives effectively and efficiently.
- Monitors activities to ensure the plant is operated according to budget without sacrificing safety, quality or ethics.
- Works closely with Project Management to achieve project schedules and resolve any potential issues that would delay our on-time delivery to our customer.

Requirements
- 5+ years as an operations leader in manufacturing who has demonstrated successful leadership of a plant team
- 5+ years of maintaining a safe plant and a team’s safety culture
- Proven work experience as operations manager or similar role
- Is process driven – sets the way forward and manages to it
- Experience budgeting and forecasting for a manufacturing organization
- Familiarity with business and financial principles
- Excellent communication skills
- Understanding of lean and six sigma principles and applications
- Technical degree a plus
Work Relationships
- Works closely with the Leadership Team to develop and implement agreed strategic activities. Reports on progress to them regularly.
- Works closely with Quality Manager to ensure no gaps exist in work processes.
- Works closely with other Functional Mangers to support assigned operation and provide input on best practices and potential improvements across the organization.
