IT Support Specialist - Norfolk, VA - Enjoy a rewarding and challenging position with a nonprofit organization that has been helping educate, train, and provide employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities since 1955. We are seeking a Full-Time IT Support Specialist who will be responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving the organization’s IT infrastructure. Provides advanced technical support, assists in the planning and execution of IT projects, maintains thorough documentation, and serves as an escalation point for IT Support Specialists. Plays a key role in ensuring system reliability, security compliance, and operational excellence while embodying a customer-service-oriented mindset. Work schedule may require being available after normal operating hours and may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and periods of inclement weather.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities represent the essential functions of this job that an individual must be able to perform with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Support, maintain, and optimize the organization’s IT systems, including servers, networks, endpoints, cloud services, and applications
  • Assist with system backups, disaster recovery procedures, and ensure business continuity planning
  • Maintain up-to-date infrastructure documentation, including network diagrams, system configurations, inventory records, and compliance materials
  • Assist with IT audit preparation and reporting needs
  • Recommend improvements to enhance IT operations, security, and efficiency
  • Participate in infrastructure upgrade projects (servers, firewalls, cloud migrations, network upgrades)
  • Research and suggest emerging technologies aligned with organizational needs
  • Serve as a technical mentor and escalation point for IT Support Specialists
  • Coordinate with the IT Director to align daily operations and project initiatives with strategic IT objectives
  • Partner with external vendors to support IT service delivery when necessary
  • Monitor compliance with security policies, including endpoint protection, network access controls, VPN configurations, and patch management
  • Assist in incident response activities to contain and remediate security events
  • Maintain accurate records of all hardware and software resources, including license expirations, version details, and configurations
  • Perform other duties as assigned and participate in the IT on-call rotation as needed.
  • Minimal travel is required to various Eggleston locations


QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, & EXPERIENCE:

The following qualifications represent the training, education, certifications, licensures, and/or work experience required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities successfully:

  • Associate’s degree in a related field is preferred or any combination of equivalent education and experience
  • At least 5 years of experience providing advanced IT support in a mixed on-premises and cloud environment
  • Preferred technical certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft 365, Apple Certified Associate, and/or Apple Certified Support Professional; Azure Administrator Associate or similar certification is a plus
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred
  • Prior experience supporting ticketing systems and ITSM processes (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow)
  • Proven experience supporting cloud-based security platforms and network administration, including managing servers, network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls), and enterprise wireless systems 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security compliance frameworks (NIST 800-171, and HIPAA)
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships and willingness to mentor junior team members
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to create clear technical documentation and diagrams
  • Ability to handle competing priorities and meet deadlines independently
  • Ability to configure, effectively use, and troubleshoot issues related to technologies such as Windows Server, Active Directory, Windows and Mac OS, laptop and desktop hardware, Anti-Virus, Email Security, and Microsoft 365 Applications, among other 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Physical demandsPerforming the duties of this job requires near visual acuity, the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds, and gross manipulation. Additionally, the employee:

  • Must be free of tuberculosis in a communicable form
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods (up to two hours)
  • Must be able to assist with set-up, maintenance, and/or breakdown of computer hardware, which may involve crouching, stooping, or reaching at/below shoulder level and overhead

Work environmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee will be primarily in an office setting.  Indoor environmental conditions will vary according to the weather conditions prevalent at the time.  The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
