JOB SUMMARY:
The Congressional Editor is responsible for leading coverage of national security and defense issues, particularly those affecting the Air Force and Space Force, in Congress. S/he may also be assigned stories outside of the congressional beat as needed. S/he produces 3-4 stories per week for the website/Daily Report and regular features for the print magazine.
The Congressional Editor serves as backup for the News Editor as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Daily Reporting and Writing (approximately 60% of effort):
- Research and write online news articles about the latest events happening in Congress that affect the Air Force and Space Force.
- Research and write additional articles as assigned.
- Plan, coordinate, conduct, and report on interviews.
- Attend and report on key speeches and events.
Editing (approximately 25% of effort):
- Fill in for News Editor when needed.
- Copy edit the News Editor’s articles for grammar, style, and syntax.
- Copy edit additional online news articles as requested.
Reporting and Writing for Air & Space Force Magazine (approximately 10% of effort):
- Research and write regular long-form articles with a broader, longer-term look at key issues facing the Air Force and Space Force.
Other Duties as assigned (approximately 5% of effort):
- Assist other staff with editing, proofreading, content development as assigned.
- Provide input to strategic content decisions in the Publications department based on relevant current and historical knowledge.
- Other tasks as assigned.
