Situated 10 kilometers west of picturesque Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. Schedule: 5x2, Monday – Friday
Position Reports To: Dam Safety EIT
Position Overview
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a student to join our New Afton team for an 8-month work term commencing in January 2026. This position will provide support to the Tailings team, typical tasks include regular survey monitoring, routine dam inspections, small project coordination, as well as acquiring and processing flyover data for tailings deposition tracking. This is primarily a field role, and the successful candidate will be expected to work in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Prioritizing safety in the planning and execution of all job responsibilities.
- Support Tailings Surveillance team with weekly survey monitoring requirements across site.
- Support dam safety team in daily, weekly, quarterly and annual technical inspections of all tailings storage facilities.
- Assist with reporting and remediation of maintenance items identified.
- Review completed construction works to ensure adherence to site standards.
- Complete volumetric tracking and planning for tailings deposition activities.
- Gain exposure to block cave gold mining, subsidence related geotechnical monitoring, and Owner/Contractor relations.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in a University engineering or technical diploma program. Preference given to candidates enrolled in geotechnical, geological, mining or civil engineering or related technical program.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, time management, and attention to detail.
- Exposure to technical writing is considered an asset.
- Past exposure to tailings or construction environments is considered an asset.
- Applicants must have access to personal transportation.
Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
- Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
- Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation
Anticipated salary for this position is $52,000.00 - $68,640.00. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
