Your contribution to the story:
At Penguin Random House Canada, we acquire, shape, and publish high-quality books that engage with and connect to our readers. You will be working as part of the editorial team to create the content that will deliver this experience to our audience. At Knopf Canada—literary home to some of the world’s finest writers—we are committed to asking questions openly, sharing answers freely, learning from each other to strengthen and refine how we work.
Reporting to the Publisher, you will support their work and collaborate with teams across the company. We are looking for someone to join our conversation. Someone who has the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities at the same time, while keeping themselves and others on track. The ability to understand and anticipate the needs of our Publisher and the wider team to support them is of paramount importance. Exceptional administrative, copyediting, and proofreading skills are required for this role, as are stellar information management skills and a proactive attitude.
What you’ll do:
- Work directly with the Publisher and all members of the editorial team
- Assist in supporting the work and needs of the Publisher with teams across the company
- Meet the overall administrative and operational needs of the imprint, including scheduling meetings and taking meeting minutes as needed; maintaining the imprint calendar with vacations and events; circulating important deadlines and administrative updates
- Assist the Publisher with drafting cover briefs, drafting TI copy, and copyediting and proofreading jacket copy
- Read and evaluate manuscripts and proposals on submission to the Publisher, and draft letters and readers reports as needed
- Read contracted manuscripts alongside the Publisher and offer critiques
- Assist with the acquisition process by helping draft acquisitions materials, and compiling/inputting contract paperwork as needed
- Coordinate the printing of galleys with the sales and marketing departments, and work with production to prepare and proof the jacket and text pages
- Assist in the awards submissions for the imprint’s list throughout the year
Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Publishing, English, or related field
- 1 year of publishing or administrative experience preferred
- Strong organization and prioritization skills to manage multiple projects at the same time and stay on deadline
- Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills
- High standards of quality, consistency, and accuracy
- Entrepreneurial spirit with a proactive approach to problem-solving, identifying and acting on ways to improve the work
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); Asana
- An inclusive approach to your work, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds
- Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus
- And of course, a deep passion for books!
