We are currently recruiting a Nurse Consultant for Jordan's Principle to support this goal.   

Nurse Consultants offer education and assessment services to children, families/primary caregivers, and anyone else supporting the family in their home community.

Services include but are not limited to:

  • Advocacy for children with intellectual or developmental disabilities:
  • Seizure identification and response training;
  • Enteral tube feed education and training;
  • Diabetes education and training for blood glucose monitoring, insulin injection, and emergency responses
  • Specialized teaching for management of specific diseases such as asthma

This position is based in Winnipeg but requires extensive travel to remote communities in Manitoba where travel by small plane and /or boat may be required in addition to overnight stays in or around a respective community.

Qualifications:

Educational:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required from an accredited faculty of nursing
  • Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse
  • Current C.P.R. skills at Basic Rescuer Level (BLS required)
  • Course work/certification in adult education is an asset
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years current clinical nursing experience
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience supporting persons with intellectual and physical disabilities or challenging behaviors, preferably in a community setting
  • 2 years in a formal supervisory or leadership role
  • Competency with enteral tube feeding, diabetes care, and seizures is an asset
  • Experience with staff training and familiarity with adult learning concepts and training techniques is an asset
  • Experience working in Pediatric nursing is an asset
  • Experience working in Indigenous communities is an asset

Professional:

  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM)
  • Familiar with the scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)
  • Familiar with CRNM/ CRPNM Practice Direction for Assignment and Delegation to Unregulated Care Providers
  • Familiar with relevant legislation and regulations - e.g. Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Vulnerable Persons Act (VPA), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS), Routine Precautions
  • Familiar with the MNU Collective Agreement and CRNM, and CRPNM practice standards
  • Proficient word processing and computer skills in a Microsoft Office environment
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours as necessary
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development to build nursing practice
  • Preference to applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities / cultures is an asset
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous culture, language, customs and beliefs is an asset
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Care Management:

Consistent with the Mission and Philosophy of the St.Amant, the Nurse Consultant is responsible for overseeing the provision of services within their area of clinical practice and ensuring adherence to St.Amant and Program policies and the requirements of their professional regulatory body. 

Duties include:

  • Becomes familiar with each client’s health history and assesses current health status
  • Develops a health care plan for each client referred as required
  • Provides leadership and consultation
  • Identifies trends in health needs of community
  • Promotes health and prevention of illness through sharing of information with community specific leadership
  • Monitors health resources in the community
  • Develops and implements an efficient training package for clients and their care providers with regard to general as well as specific health issues
  • Provides consultation and supports coordination of services to address health problems that have not been resolved by standard measures or that are complex in nature
  • Provides recommendations for required medical follow-up
  • Coordinates health assessment and history for clients referred for such service
