K9 Officer presso City of San Luis, AZ

About the Department

Under general supervision, the incumbent is a specially trained law enforcement officer responsible for maintaining K9 training records, participating in weekly K9 training, completing annual certification in the K9's area of specialization, providing daily care for the K9, and performing a range of law enforcement duties including patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigations.

As a K9 Officer, you will:

• Participate in weekly training is performed by the San Luis Police Department K9 Handlers and guidance of the surrounding agencies K9 Unit Program Coordinator. 
• Maintain a high level of knowledge and expertise in K9 training techniques, tactics, and equipment
• Keep accurate records of the K9 dogs' training, certifications, and health status
• Train and handles K9 dogs in operational activities, such as searching for suspects, tracking, crowd control and drug detection. 
• Provide proper care and maintenance for K9 dogs, including feeding, grooming and exercising.
• Ensure daily maintenance of all equipment necessary to support the K9 Unit, this includes outfitting patrol vehicles with safety K9 inserts, temperature monitoring systems, and alarms. 
• Perform a high number of demonstrations per year for various groups and local schools, speaking with hundreds of people.
• Work closely with other law enforcement agencies, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

• Must have completed probation and have a minimum of one year of experience as a Police Officer. 
• Must be able to successfully complete the K9 Training Academy within 6 months of appointment.

Licenses and Certifications:
All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment.

• A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. 
• Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) Certification as Peace Officer and currently in good standing.

Special Requirements:

• Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis
• Officer must live in a house with a yard for safety, security and well-being of the animal as well as to minimize liability.
  1. The property must have a securely enclosed yard with a minimum five to six-foot fence to prevent escape.
  2. Department provided kennel must be installed within the yard, or the officer must be willing to have one installed at the department’s expense.
  3. K9s handler’s residence and housing facilities are subject to periodic inspection with reasonable advanced notice.

Desired/Preferred:

• Bilingual in Spanish
• Ability to work outside of regular hours including evenings, weekend and holidays as needed.

Assignment Terms:
This is a temporary special assignment, full time, non-exempt. for a duration of three years which may be extended for an additional year by the Police Chief.
