City Attorney Position - Join Our Legal Team!

The City of Thomaston is seeking proposals from qualified attorneys to serve as City Attorney on a contractual basis. This executive-level position requires a highly skilled attorney who can provide expert legal assistance, sound judgment, and solid legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and City departments.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Active member of the State Bar of Georgia.

  • Licensed to practice before all Georgia courts and the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia.

  • At least seven (7) years of legal experience, with preference given to candidates with local government law experience.

  • Must possess superior research and writing skills.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License.


Essential Qualifications

This position requires an attorney who can:

  • Conduct civil lawsuits, prepare briefs, and research legal issues.

  • Draft ordinances, contracts, policies, and legal opinions.

  • Evaluate controversial situations and present clear legal options.

  • Perform duties independently, demonstrating strong analytical, judgment, and problem-solving skills.

  • Adapt to changes in the work environment and manage competing demands.

  • Interact effectively with elected officials, staff, outside agencies, and the public.


Duties and Responsibilities

The City Attorney will perform the following, as directed:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager.

  • Represent the City in legal and administrative proceedings.

  • Serve as general counsel in complex litigation matters.

  • Attend all regular and special-called City Council meetings (first and third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., approximately two hours each) and joint meetings with the county.

  • Review agendas for City Council meetings.

  • Research and prepare legal opinions for City Council, City Manager, boards, and staff.

  • Draft and revise ordinances, contracts, and other legal documents.

  • Investigate and evaluate legal claims against the City.

  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for city officials and employees.

  • Maintain professional development by keeping abreast of new laws, policies, and legal practices.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Mayor, Council, or City Manager.


Terms of Engagement
  • The City Attorney will serve on a contractual basis, billing the City for services at an hourly rate.

  • The attorney must maintain their own office and practice.

  • The City will not provide office expenses, subscriptions, or other compensation outside the identified services.

  • The position is appointed or reappointed annually by the Mayor and City Council, typically in January.
