The City of Wylie has a new open position for an Engineering Inspector. The selected candidate will conduct inspections and perform a variety of professional construction management duties. Monitors construction work and oversees capital improvement engineering and development projects under construction performed by builders and contractors within rights-of-way and easements for compliance with approved plans, City's right-of-way ordinance, and other applicable codes and specifications. Assists with processing right-of-way permits and citizen complaints.
SUPERVISION
Supervision is provided by the Engineering Inspection Supervisor.
Position Duties
- Monitors and inspects construction work performed by builders and contractors for compliance with approved plans, City ordinances, codes, and contract specifications.
- Interprets blueprints, plans, and specifications to ensure compliance of the infrastructure to approved plans and specifications.
- Conducts inspections of municipal improvement projects including streets, subgrades, soil testing, steel, utilities, and drainage systems for compliance with City codes and ordinances. Verifies that proper materials are used and all other conditions are in conformance with contract and City specifications, documents, and requirements.
- Coordinates testing of water, sanitary sewer lines, and concrete with a lab and contractors.
- Coordinates and manages utility relocations necessary for project completion.
- Resolves disputes resulting from changes or conflicts in plan specifications or design.
- Meets with contractors and/or subcontractors; schedules and attends pre-construction, preliminary, and final inspection meetings, and develops a preliminary and final punch list for each project prior to completion.
- Coordinates with contractors on methods, sequence, and public safety during construction.
- Measures and calculates quantities for payment on contracts and maintains as-built plans.
- Reviews quality control testing and reports for discrepancies or errors.
- Reviews and approves right-of-way and franchise utility permits, as required.
- Interpret and apply the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) including federal and state laws regarding equal access for people with disabilities.
- Maintains applicable information in the division's databases, project tracking, and work order systems.
- Provides project status updates and reviews to immediate supervisor and other staff as necessary.
- Coordinates with applicable City employees to assist with development and achieve project completion.
- Meets with citizens to discuss and resolve property issues and complaints.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills at all times, with contractors, public and City staff.
- Wears hard hat, safety glasses, and steel toed boots as needed.
- Presents good appearance, appropriate dress and good grooming.
- Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
- Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
- Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers, and others.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Additional training at a vocational/business/technical school or community college, preferred. Three to five years’ experience in the inspection of construction projects. Valid Driver's License, Class “C” with no restrictions except “A”. Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Clear driving record. Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED:
Medium: Exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Works outside in inclement weather, including extreme cold and extreme heat. Subject to temperature swings, loud noise, and exposure to fumes, odors and dust. Climbs and crawls into and out of pipes, culverts, manholes and trenches. Kneels, sits, squats, stands and stoops daily. Hears clearly; visually inspects work safely in traffic and dangerous construction situations.
