About the Department

Manages and administers servers, appliances, databases and premise/cloud applications. Maintains and troubleshoots server hardware, software and peripheral devices.

Position Duties

• Administers the county wide Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365 tenant, IIS, DNS, and DHCP. • Develops, tests, and maintains procedures to manage, administer, implement and maintain MSSQL and other databases and their servers. • Manages redundant virtual environments and datacenter resources such as hosts, switches, and storage arrays. Administers systems and monitors health for optimal utilization. • Manages large-scale storage appliances used for backup and disaster response. Configures and runs backups according to retention policies, monitors job status and restores data as needed. Develops and tests disaster recovery procedures for hardware and software implementations. • Maintains various software applications for enterprise, departments, and more. Provides technical support for software administrators. • Installs, upgrades and diagnoses errors of operating systems and computer software relating to servers, networks and computers; configures applications to interface with existing software; acts as liaison for software vendors. • Performs systems maintenance; provides configuration control for software and application upgrades; monitors performance; mitigates security risks; and identifies errors, malfunctions and deficiencies. • Researches, evaluates and provides recommendations for new systems equipment and/or software; analyzes needs, designs systems and researches applications; recommends streamlined, efficient solutions to county staff, vendors, and outside entities. • Creates and performs queries on archiving system for public record requests and exports deliverables. • Designs and delivers specialized reports. • Organizes and manages special projects such as software integrations, upgrades, and migrations. Prepares detailed plans and tests prior to implementation and coordinates with coworkers. • Fulfills job duties of Senior Systems Administrator (SSA) in his/her absence; assists SSA with complex applications and special projects. • Mentor division team members to share knowledge of overlapping systems. • Shares standby with SSA for enterprise and server after hours calls. Availability to respond to declared emergencies/on-call outside of normal duty hours is required. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience: Associate’s degree in Computer Science or closely related field, supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience in computer systems and networks, to include experience in cloud computing, database management, and server operating system maintenance and administration; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Microsoft Server, Linux, MSSQL, M365, and Exchange experience preferred. Information Technology experience with a state, county, or local government preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid driver license.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or a negligible amount constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This position is consistent with an information technology environment and associated exposures. Physical demands are essentially those of sedentary work. Language Ability: Requires ability to read English, as well as technical data, policy and procedure manuals, codes, etc., ranging from moderately complex to highly technical terminology. Requires the ability to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats, and adhering to all rules of spelling, grammar, punctuation, diction, and style. Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English. Requires the ability to communicate with a broad array of individuals from various professional backgrounds. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, mathematical, or diagrammatic form; to make independent and logical judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, use decimals, calculate percentages; interpret graphs; compute ratio and proportions. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads, or public contact. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
