Responsibilities:
The Underwriting Lead plays a critical role in supporting the AVP, Underwriting Production Leader by overseeing day-to-day underwriting operations, mentoring and leading team members, and ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines. This role contributes to the achievement of profitable growth, operational excellence, and strong producer relationships.
- Lead and support a team of underwriters in risk selection, pricing, and adherence to underwriting policies.
- Assist in managing the renewal book of business, focusing on retention and profitability.
- Collaborate with the AVP to execute underwriting strategies and initiatives.
- Serve as a referral resource for complex or high-value risks.
- Monitor and report on team performance metrics including production, loss ratios, and quality control.
- Support producer relationship management and help meet production commitments.
- Participate in the development and delivery of training programs for underwriting staff.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance underwriting efficiency.
- Mentor and coach underwriters to foster professional development.
- Contribute to the creation and refinement of underwriting guidelines and procedures.
May perform other functions as assigned.
Candidates based in Chicago or Minneapolis are preferred. However, we are open to considering highly qualified remote candidates who are available to travel as needed.
Qualifications:- Minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience, preferably in Human Services or related lines.
- Prior experience in a leadership or mentoring role is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting practices, regulatory requirements, and industry trends.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities.
- Proficiency in underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
