Classification: Full-Time

     Exempt – Not Overtime Eligible


General Summary: The Building & Safety Inspector is responsible for inspecting buildings and structures to ensure that construction, alterations, or maintenance work complies with building codes and zoning ordinances.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspects the quality of materials and the methods of construction for all wood framing, concrete work, steel erection, plastering, tile work, masonry, heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems, plumbing, and electrical installations, and other construction work.
  • Approves certificates of occupancy; investigates complaints; issues stop- work orders and citations; deals tactfully with complainants, contractors, and property owners.
  • Gives technical information relative to building construction and code requirements to the public on the phone, in the field, or over the counter.
  • Interprets technical construction codes and ordinances.
  • Detects deviations from plans, regulations, and standard construction practices.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by courses in geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.
  • Possession of a Building Inspector Certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC) is required.
  • Combination inspector certification is highly desired.
  • CASp Certification is highly desired.
  • A valid California Driver's License is required.
  • Four (4) years of experience in a primary construction trade.
  • Two (2) years of experience in performing inspections with a public agency.
  • Two (2) years of field engineering or construction work.
