 We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a part –time Water Systems Quality Control Technician, working with the Department of Utilities.  The ideal candidate will perform tasks involving the operation and maintenance of the City's distribution system.


Under close supervision, this job classification is responsible for flushing the City's distribution system and safely disposing the water into the storm or sanitary sewer systems. Collects water samples and performs simple water quality tests.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Makes independent water quality assessments to correct distribution system water quality issues through flushing and initiates or performs actions to implement corrections to resolve customer complaints.
  • Operates water distribution system infrastructure including valves, hydrants and blow-offs to utilize various flushing techniques to restore and maintain water quality.  Makes recommendations for installations of Automatic Flushing Devices (AFD's).
  • Performs part replacement, assembly and inventory activities related to the Automatic Flushing Devices; makes minor repairs to blow-offs; exercises fire hydrants.
  • Reviews utility distribution system maps to determine water source and flow, proper valves, and adequate flushing locations to conduct specific flushing activities throughout the distributions system.  Reports corrections and updates to supervisor.
  • Operates programmable equipment to control and adjust automatic flushing devices to ensure water quality compliance.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints and reports information to supervisor.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Yuma and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Laborer, plumbing, construction, or maintenance experience is preferred.

Knowledge of: 

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, American Water Works Association, Environmental Protection Agency, Uniform Plumbing Code, Yuma City Code, City Utility Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health administration laws, rules and requirements governing the management of water distribution systems and wastewater collections systems.
  • Conventional, unidirectional, and alternative pipe cleaning and flushing methods.
  • Drinking water quality characteristics including odor, color, clarity and disinfectant levels.
  • The principles, practices, techniques of water distribution system operations.
  • Safe work practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Skill in:

  • Following safe work practices, and verbal and written instructions.
  • Operation of water distribution infrastructure such as valves, fire hydrants, and blow-offs.
  • Performing flow and water discharge mathematical calculations
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plats, maps, aerial photos and diagrams.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. Water Distribution System Operator's Grade 1 certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is required within one year of appointment.  Additional specific technical training and certifications may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather, and includes walking long distances; required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; requires vision capacity to read meter dials.
