Qualifications

Required

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Two (2) years of experience in public building custodial operations, one (1) year of which shall have been in a custodial personnel oversight or supervisory role.
  • Must successfully complete the FCPS Custodial Certification Course prior to or within one (1) year of appointment.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis.
  • Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, procedures, and cleaning materials.
  • Ability to train, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of assigned staff.
  • Ability to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare routine reports.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

Major Duties/Essential Functions

  1. Plans, assigns, supervises, instructs, and assists assigned custodial staff.
  2. Sets performance level expectations for cleaning buildings, maintaining grounds, using equipment, materials, and supplies.
  3. Establishes work schedules.
  4. Ensures employees operate as an effective working unit.
  5. Assists school-based administrator in determining work schedules and approving leave.
  6. Counsels employees and resolves informal complaints and grievances through discussion.
  7. Reports on employees' work hours and performance.
  8. Initiates disciplinary action as needed.
  9. Makes daily inspections to ensure that prescribed standards are maintained with respect to plant equipment, property, and grounds.
  10. Requisitions and distributes equipment, materials, and supplies.
  11. Performs and/or ensures that preventive maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs are performed.
  12. Supervises and participates in maintaining outside of building by removing snow and ice, mowing lawns, maintaining shrubbery, picking up paper and debris, removing and emptying containers of standing water.
  13. Ensures that proper safety and security precautions are observed.
  14. Assists school and community groups that use the building to provide adequate custodial services.
  15. Transports and empties large trash or recycling receptacles into outdoor units.
  16. Moves and transports furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, and other supplies, manually or with mechanical assistance.
  17. To support performance evaluation:
    1. Completes performance evaluations, in conjunction with plant operations monitor, of lower-graded staff, with final approval by school-based administrator.
    2. Assists the plant operations monitor and school-based administrator in developing progressive disciplinary actions.
  18. To support hiring:
    1. Assists the school-based administrator with the hiring of all custodial staff by participating in selection advisory committees.
    2. Provides technical guidance on the custodial operation, to aid in the hiring process.
  19. Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
