As a mandatory intern in Software Engineering, you will partner with STM Materials Solutions Division to develop a software tool / Web application for physical data evaluation. Support the modernization of a key internal software tool for evaluation material science data. The main focus of the six month long internship will be migrating a back-end program from C++ to Python and designing a graphical user interface (GUI) to enhance accessibility and usability.
Your Responsibilities
Analyze and refactor existing C++ code into Python, ensuring functional parity
Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to understand system requirements
Develop and test a user-friendly front end (desktop GUI or web application)
Optimize back end logic for performance and scalability
Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
Participate in regular code reviews and project meetings
Skills You Bring
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program with a focus in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
Proficiency in Python and C++; knowledge of software design principles
Experience or strong interest in GUI frameworks (e.g., PyQt, Tkinter) or web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, etc.)
Familiarity with version control systems (preferably Git)
Problem-solving mindset, strong communication skills, and a collaborative spirit
