Job Title: Senior Bookkeeper
Job Classification: Non-Exempt / Full-time
Reports to: Controller
Location: Hybrid (in office 3 days/week)
Compensation: $36.06/hr + opportunities for quarterly bonuses
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, the Senior Bookkeeper works out of our Lafayette, California, support office. The Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations to ensure accurate financial records and compliance with internal policies and external regulations. This role requires a high degree of accuracy, discretion, and organizational skill. The Senior Bookkeeper plays a critical role in supporting financial decision-making by producing timely reports, monitoring budgets, and ensuring strong internal controls.
Essential duties include but are not limited to:
- Recording Financial Transactions: Enter and verify all daily financial activity, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data.
- General Ledger Maintenance: Reconcile sub-ledgers to the general ledger; investigate and resolve discrepancies; maintain supporting documentation.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and variance analyses for management review.
- Payroll Administration: Process payroll on schedule; maintain accurate records of wages, deductions, garnishments, and tax withholdings; ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
- Accounts Payable: Manage the review, coding and processing of vendor invoices; manage payment schedules; reconcile vendor statements; maintain positive vendor relationships.
- Accounts Receivable: Upload invoices to accounting system, monitor aging reports, follow up on overdue balances, and coordinate collections efforts as needed.
- Bank and Credit Card Reconciliations: Perform reconciliations for all CBEM bank and credit card accounts; research and resolve any variances promptly.
- Budget Support: Assist the Controller and Assistant Controller with budget preparation and monitoring; provide variance analyses and recommend corrective actions.
- Audit and Compliance: Support internal and external audits; prepare schedules, gather documentation, and respond to auditor inquiries. Ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational policies.
- Expense and Cash Management: Review employee expense reports; monitor spending patterns; suggest cost-savings initiatives.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and implement efficiencies, including the review, revision and creation of Finance department documentation and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with HR, Operations, and Program staff to ensure accurate and timely financial support.
- Confidentiality and Integrity: Maintain strict confidentiality of all financial information and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive matters.

Skills and Qualifications:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred (equivalent experience accepted).
- Minimum 5 years of progressive bookkeeping/accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and bookkeeping principles.
- Proficiency in accounting software; experience with Stampli, Ramp and NetSuite preferred.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort with Google Workspace and Apple OS preferred.
